Yesterday I was invited to join a two boat party in Rio Vista. The host Greg Lyons, brought eight clients of his together for a sturgeon adventure. I chose to go on Ken’s boat because I could just feel he was the man, and sure enough he was the man. His intimate knowledge of the waters and pre-trip scouting produced a total of eight sturgeon. Two over sized, two under sized, and two keepers. A very symmetrical catch by a guide that is anything but symmetrical. Ken really went all out for us. To a man we all want to fish again for these monsters. Thanks Ken, I will put your number in my speed dialer. Hope to see you soon.

I My wife and I would like to say thank you again for the great fishing experience on Wednesday, the eleventh of February. Even though the fish were being really stubborn that day, we still couldn’t find any dull or negative parts to the trip. Everything from the organizing and planning to the launching and fishing was done perfectly and professionally. I have paid alot of money for guided trips before, and I have to say, that none of my guides tried harder, knew more, or even compared to the excellent service that our guides Ken and Dallas provided to us. We had such a good time and would like to say thanks again. We will see you in June for some shad and striped bass, and again in November for the great King Salmon. We will keep in touch, and probably even plan something in between for a little more fun. Vicki, Ken, and Dallas are very nice people who know what they are talking about, and we are very excited to fish with them again. Hope we can fish soon, Frank

Mr. Ken,

Thank you for another coulple great days on the River! Not only is it a pleasure to fish with a great and knowledable Fishman, but I must say it is truly a greater pleasure and experience fishing with a good person. Mr. G. Gregg and I had a wonderful time and learned a million things about shad fishing.Your efforts, demeanor and dedication are unmatched by any of the many fishing guides I have had the pleasure to fish with! Your ability to make your clients feel at ease and as though they are fishing with a long time friend is for sure a gift. Your patience and understanding of the many rookie mistakes that your inexperieced clients make while sharpening their skills is a quality that many guides never develope. Your heart is truly oversized. It all makes for the kind of “dream trip” we all our trying to find when when we search for a guide. You are the best!! If you can put up with us, you can bet will be back! The sooner the better!!!

Thanks again for a spectacular and super fun couple of days that will never be forgot.

Best regards,

Gregory and I would like to sincerely thank both of you for an unforgettable fishing experience. Vicky, your trip arrangements were high class! Both of us truly admired Ken’s skills and knowledge as a fishing guide. During the trip we also appreciated him as a caring and fun person. The salmons that we caught, including the giant 45 pounder really made our day.

Please, stay healthy and strong, since we intend to have many more fishing trips with you in the coming years!

Thanks.

Ken, you are AWESOME!! Great time and lots of action. A truly dedicated guide that not only shares stories and laughs, but gets you fish, regardless how long it may take. That’s what will keep me coming back….

Ken, here’s a joke for ya buddy;
A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. … The case came up in court. The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied, ‘Well your Honor, it was like this: when the lady got on the bus, I couldn’t help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said, ‘The Double Mint Twins are coming’ and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said, ‘Logan’s Liniment will reduce the swelling,’ and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, ‘William’s Big Stick Did the Trick,’ and I could hardly contain myself. But Your Honor, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, ‘Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident!’ …. I just lost it!

If you want the latest “outfitter’s shiny”, get a different guide. But if you want real knowledge and experience of the river and fish, and a fishing friend on the river, get the Pirate. The day I had on the Sacramento River with the Pirate on August 8, 2007 was an experience of a lifetime. A hard working guide, for you guys that want to be sure you get your money’s worth. But if you want to fish (and, by the way, to catch big fish!), but also to appreciate the likes of black tail deer, osprey, kingfisher and egret) and to share an appreciation for them with a guy who is as much a part of the river as they are, see the Pirate. Just hope he’s got a day open for me another time, since I can’t imagine coming to northern California without fishing with him! Peace. Alan.

Ken,

Dave and I enjoyed our adventure with you. It was a great trip and we appreciate your sense of humor and effort to get us into the fish. Even though we picked a day to fish with you that the fish were not cooperating, your endurance to get us fish was unmatched by I believe anyone else on the river. We were one of the first boats on the river and one of the last off. If it were not for your extraordinary work ethic and perseverance Dave would not have hooked into a personal best Salmon at 42 pounds it made the day to see him hook up and land the fish. And the relief on your face when the fish was on the deck showed how much your customers/friends mean to you. Thank you for making our first trip with you a memorable one.

My son Alex and I had an outstanding fishing experience with Ken and Dallas two weeks ago. We plied the Sac that day with intensity and determination. For the day we saw only one small jack salmon in anyone else’s bag. About two in the afternoon we hooked onto a 30 pound buck. Alex had a great time fighting the fish and landed it after about 20 minutes. We have some great pics of the Pirate, Dallas, and Alex…plus a great pic of me holding the salmon. [Even though I didn’t do anything but snap the camera!!!].

This was actually my second time with the Pirate…In June I traveled with Rudy and John… Then we caught bass and shad… Again an outstanding experience with the Pirate and Dallas.

Without any question, we will all be back!

However, they both would be lost without Vickie who keeps the whole operation organized and operating. She is the one who puts it all together, the guys would be still running around in their underware without her.

We have always brought home a nice load of fish each time we came up. I have hired a umer of guides over the years but these people are the best!!

I’ve been fishing with my son for (10) years, he’s 13 years old now. I decided that Anthony was old enough to appreciate and feel the experience of fishing with a pro-fisherman. I researched the internet for fishing guides and found the River Pirate.
Ken and Vickie, we had a wonderful experience fishing. Anthony got the experience of catching a great fighting fish (american shade), but even more valuable he learned to respect/preserve nature even more. We caught and released our fish. Ken is a true professional and a real Great Guy!

Absolutely incredible late march Sturgeon fishing. These soft biters turn into powerful monsters when hooked. 65″ and 60 lbs plus. There is nothing like it.

Hi Vicki & Ken;

This was the best fishing trip we ever had and a great b-day present for our father. He was simply thrilled by the whole experience. Sure, the fishing was great as we caught our two monsters before noon but the fun we had throughout the day was simply worth every minute. Ken, you are a great guy beside being a master fishermen. We look forward to be fishing with you soon.

I went fishing with the River Pirate and his 1st mate Dallas on Fri 10/29/04. I fished with Joe and ‘Pastor’ Bob. They drove all the way from Arizona and I flew up from LA. After we launched we got to the 1st hole and got hit immediately, but we missed it. The day before, they said one pole got hit so hard, the tip dipped into the water. Another time, the rod holder broke. Can the fish be that brutal up here I thought?

So with everyone awake and pumped up we got bite a second time minutes later. Joe landed a nice 25lb Salmon. Nice color with alittle red on the side. A harrrgh we all yelled out as it was placed in the boat’s fish hold.

Next I got bit and this one was a stubborn one. He kept peeling out line and I was thinking, this one fights like a bluefin tuna. Stubborn and would not cooperate and not come to the boat. When he got close to the boat, zzzzzzzeeeeee went the drag and I’m thinking ok, I didn’t bring my rod belt holder and my arms are aching, what have I gotten myself into? After 15 minutes, in the dim morning light you can barely see the shadow of the fish approaching the boat. Dallas was waiting with the net then….pop! The hook came out of his mouth and the lure came flying and ended up landing on the back of the boat. Good thing it didn’t hit anyone. I still could not see the fish but I heard his tail go splash and then he was gone. I don’t know how big it was but what a fight! Ok so round 1 goes to the fish.

Pastor Bob was next. He’s a retired policeman and minister. He got a nice 30lb chrome one. He’s gone to places like Alaska to fish. But this is alot of fun he says. This one hole seems to be full of fish. It’s amazing in that Ken tells us it’s only 6ft deep. We could see and hear the Salmon rolling all around us. Ken would see one and say, oh that one looked like 40lbs!

We all had one fish a piece by 8am. We missed 3 hits too. So our batting avg is around .500. Not bad. The bite slowed alittle as the water temp actually dropped to 54. We started out at 56. Ken said we’ll wait it out a bit so the cloud cover to lift and heat up the water a bit.

Around 11a that’s when I got bit again. At first the fight was kind of light, but as he got closer to the boat then zzzzeeeeee went the drag and the line was peeling out again. This fight is on! This is a good one and the pull felt like the 1st one I lost. This one not only pulled down deep, but he zig zagged like a football running back! This is where the expert boat maneuving and communication between Ken and Dallas is at its best. The fish was moving side to side trying to shake the hook. I kept the rod tip up and line tight to keep the pressure on. It was getting hard to crank the reel. Ken moved the boat to stay with the fish. Joe and Bob reeled in their lines so there was no chance of tangles.

The fish finally surfaced after 15mins and Ken yelled, oh yeah, it’s a nice fish! Keep the line tight yelled out Dallas. The second time the fish jumped and revealed his size. All I can think was oh pleeze salmon gods please don’t let me lose this one! As the fish was close to the boat he made one final surge and went to the other side of the boat. Oh no I thought, I’m going to lose him because I can’t move to the other side fast enough to keep the line tight. The fuel tank was blocking my way. Dallas saw the situation and quickly took my rod and kept the pressure on as he was able move to the other side of the boat. The fish finally tired was on it’s side. Joe, an expert fisherman helped and netted the beast. This one came in at 45lbs. Ken let out big Haaaarrrggghh and gave me a big high five! We all got our limits by 11:30a and called it a day. All very nice fish.

This was truely a team effort. I’ll be the 1st to admit, I could not have landed this without everyone’s unselfish efforts. I am truly humble to fish with such great fisherman and more importantly, good people.

If you come up here to fish, be sure to visit the Coleman fish hatchery. Just follow the signs from the hotel. You can see the monster Salmon that came up to spawn. Then you’ll understand how big the fish are in our very own backyard here in CA. Ken says he has clients come from as far as Japan to fish here!

Okay everyone….yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me……….

Tight Lines Everyone! God Bless You!

On Oct. 22 / 23 2004 i went salmon fishing for the first time with Ken the River Pirate. I had one of the best fishing day on the water of my life. I have been on fishing trips with other guides back east for Bass, and by far the trip with Ken was the most perfessional guided trip that i have taken. Kens boat has lots of room to move about, his fishing gear is some of the best that money cane buy. On the two day trip we got our limits both days, i boated a 27 & 26 plus an 12 & 8 pound salmon. I plan to go fishing with ken next year because i had a great time on the water fishing with him & his deckhand Dallas, ken works hard so that i was able to get a limit of fish. You can not go wrong by spnding a day on the water with THE RIVER PIRATE

My son and I took my Dad out for his 76th birthday for a day on the water with Ken and Dallas. We had a wonderful time and caught five nice salmon when most other people were not catching much of anything. When most guides call it a day after 8 hours Ken continued to work hard to put us on the fish and did! He spent over 12 hours on the water with us and was always friendly, helpful and knowledgable. We have been spoiled and would not use any other guide!!

My friend and I learned to fish on the upper Sacramento and we just figured on having a good time talking about old times and getting our lines wet. Ken demonstrated his expertise by getting us a limit. It was a beautiful day but started out raining. That just served to cut down on the crowds. Starting at 6 am we had 3 fish in the well by 8:30. When the sun came out we enjoyed a variety of spots and my buddy and I talked about the old days. Ken helped us put the fun back in fishing. I tip my glass to riverpirates. We had a blast.

Pete and I had a great time taking our boys, J.B. and Nico out on the Sacramento with the Ken, The River Pirate! Very relaxing and Ken and Dallas were great with the boys. Ken also shared a lot of information about the river making it a very interesting trip. In addition to 4 salmon, the boys were also given tips on bass fishing and a lure a piece to try out. Thanks for your hospitality and we will be fishing again with the River Pirate!

Hey Pirate…RRRRRRRRR

Just wanted to say me and Mike had another great time with you. When Fishing the Sac there’s only one Guide on our Dance Card.

There is something to say about a Fishing Guide who can catch fish when no other guides that day caught any. Every boat we passed had no fish, we landed three and had several short-strikes. Obviously, the larger fish pods hadn’t moved up river yet and the fish that were there were far and few between. But that didn’t seem to matter, Kenny got us Hooked Up anyway!

For us, it’s not all about fishing, its Atmosphere. It’s very easy to warm up to Ken, he’s got a great sense of humor and is very easy going. We laughed, joked and even took time out to go swimming(100+ degree’s that day).

Another point that is worth praise is the fact that most guides have limits on how long they will keep you out on the river. I have fished with guides that, once your limit on the target fish was reached, you came home. And it’s no fun traveling sometimes hours to go fishing, only to spend 2 hours on the water, then your done.

When you hire Kenny(The River Pirate), it’s an “All Day Adventure”!! He is driven to give you every penny’s worth. That, all by itself, keeps us coming back.

Thank you again Ken & Vicki for another Great Trip!!

Keep the ‘Vicki Ann’ warmed up and we will see you in a Month!

Best Regards,
Buck

Dear Ken,
Thank you for a wonderful day of fishing!

The salmon that Dane caught was the centerpiece of a family dinner with Dane, his grandma, grandpa, aunt, cousins, and me. The following day, Dane’s aunt used what was left, in a salad for her friends. Everyone raved about how good that salmon tasted!

It was important to Dane to be able to bring home dinner and give his family something that was so appreciated and enjoyed. But more important than the fish Dane caught, was spending the day fishing with the River Pirate. There is a sense of confidence, peace, and happiness in Dane when he talks about that day fishing with you.

You took the time to teach him about his passion (fishing), share stories with him, laugh and joke with him,and talk with him about life values. You showed him a different way of being a man than he has seen before. In you, he saw that a man could be sensitive, thoughtful, caring and in-tune with nature. Rather than relating through competition, power, control, and possessions, Dane experienced how to relate through sharing, laughter, stories and mutual respect.

As his mother, I could not give Dane what you gave him that day he fished with you. Only a man like yourself could give a 15 year-old boy what you gave Dane that day – and – I AM GRATEFUL.

Truly, God works through you. Dane’s path in life will be different because it crossed yours.

Dane and I took pictures of our vacation together. However, the day before he fished with you. our camera got wet. The film was ruined and our camera didn’t work anymore. But the best picture of our vacation we have! It is the picture that you took of Dane holding the 18 lb salmon he caught! Dane was so excited to see his picture on your web site! He has sent it to everyone he knows!

Dane is talking to his brother and brother-in-law and checking his school schedule. As soon as he can figure the times that they can get away, we will call you about sturgeon fishing. Thanks again.

Your friend,
Sherry Jackson

Hello Vicki, Ken, and Dallas,
My wife and I would like to say thank you again for the great fishing experience on Wednesday, the eleventh of February. Hope you can fish soon, Ken.

I want to tell you that me and Mike had a great time with you on the River. Although, the heavy rains made fishing for Salmon impossible,(which you warned us about before we went) we just had to go anyway.

I have fished with many Guides, and not one has gone the lengths you did to get us fish. One of the very few who actually cared more about our trip, then getting paid. My Hats off to you Sir!!

I highly recommend this Pirate to anyone seeking more then just a fishing trip.
Fishing with you my friend, WAS an Adventure!

Thank You, Vicki and Ken, for a Great Time!!

Hi Ken and Dallas,
Thanks for a great day on the River this last Monday, Dec 22nd. You really do give everything you have, to offer folks their best chance of going home successful. We started before sun-up and we finished when it went down. Your persistance really paid off when we landed a beautiful 35 pounder late in the afternoon, enabling us to drive home victorious.
The weather and scenary were perfect, and we caught a few trout to boot.
We are checking calendars and plan to book the next trip soon!

Also, thanks to Vicki for excellent coordination of the logistics for this trip. Everything went very smoothly.

Hi Captain (Ken) & Co-Captain (Dallas),

Hope you all are in good health and having fun on the river. I just want to say Mike and I had a blast catching those huge king salmon. That 52 pounder was incredible, and one hell of a fight!!! Good thing Dallas had that net under that lunker, otherwise, it would’ve been the one that got away. I believe the swivel snapped when I gave it the last pull. Pretty incredible Ken. Ken, when you said the fish was under the boat I thought I was in a “Jaws” movie. You did a great job maneuvering the boat to gain advantage over the mighty King. Thanks for the pictures on your Web site, and I will be calling you soon to reserve a trip for four on that Sturgeon outing. Please E-mail me back with some prime dates for next year. Alright now, sing along, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!!!!!!!!!

Ken and Dallas,

Wow!! What can I say about a day on the river, where we limited out on salmon by 11:15 am, including a 41 pound, 2 ounce monster that jumped four times. Dan and I had an great time and we enjoyed sharing the day with you and Dallas. Your passion for fishing, coupled with your knowledge makes you a unique and special guide. It was most impressive to me that even after limiting out, you kept putting us on to trout and steelhead. The catch-and-release action was non-stop and continued after many other captains would have called it a day.

We can’t wait to come back……

Thanks for a wonderful day of fishing on the Sacramento River. My brother and I had a great day. Your expertise and knowledge of the river is incredible. You put us in all the right spots and salmon were jumping everwhere but unfortunately they had a bad case of lock-jaw that day. We fished hard all day and got a few hits but no hook-up. Late in the afternoon, when most of the guides had already given up, my brother finally hooked onto a good size salmon on 6 pound test line, using spining gear and a salmon egg. I was a little skeptical about being able to get a salmon to take one solitary salmon egg, and an artificial one at that, but not anymore! The salmon took us for a long run UPSTREAM so we chased it with the boat. Unfortunately, ten minutes into the battle the salmon wrapped the line around a sunken branch and broke the line, but what a battle!. By that time, it was getting late and honestly, as much as we like to fish, I was ready to call it a day, but you guys were intent on not letting us go without landing a salmon. While all of the other guides were long gone, we fished until the sun came down and still you were not ready to give up. We had been fishing since about 6 a.m. and we were tired but you kept on encouraging us and finally just as the sun was going over the horizon, boom!, fish on. An exciting battle and a 15 pound hen was in the ice box. Time to go home?, no, you still wanted us to catch at least one more. We fished for a little longer till we could’nt see anymore and you finally let us call it a day. I have to say, you are the most determined fisherman I have ever known and your service is first rate. You had more than earned your fee hours before we finally quit. Both of you went all out to make our day, and although the fish were in lock-jaw mode, your relentless effort paid off. Thanks for a wonderful day of fishing and we will come back again, for sure.

Mr.

Best regards,
Mike Portz

PS G Gregg and I remember our biggest shads of the weekend at 12 lbs minimum. Of course mine was bigger then G. Greggs. Does this type of memory qualify us as true fishermen? In fact the more I think about it I believe mine was 4 lbs. bigger then G. Gregg’s. What do you think?

Watching the osprey flying over our boat with a fish, freshly captured, in it’s claws, is another site that most people see only on TV!
Of course, having to listen to your horrible Pirate Jokes, was just icing on the cake!
The day was about much more than just fishing. We hope to get the opportunity to go out again with the “River Pirate” soon.
