This trip began at 6:00 AM, when I picked up my client from his Motel. We headed down to the Sacramento River and launched at the Gravel Bar. There was not much going this morning… not much at all. We tried plugs of all colors, and still no biters, but there were fish everywhere! So, I decided to move upriver, where we found a pod of fish, but still no biters, that is, for a while… and then about 2:15, Lawrence hooked up with a 24 lb. hen! He had never before caught a King Salmon, anywhere! He was ecstatic, and it was a thrill to watch Lawrence pull in his Very First King Salmon!! We had a slow start, but this turned out to be a great trip, and we had fun!! Arrrrr Matey’s! The River Pirate, Ken Hoffman

Jim and Martin joined Tony today, and everyone got an early start. We started our day at Mud Ball, just below Old Mouth, on the Sacramento River. On the first pass back trolling Kwick-Fish, we hooked 5 fish, and got 3 to the boat. The 1st was 28 pounds, the 2nd was 21 pounds, and the 3rd was 35 pounds. Tony brought in the 35 pounder! We then moved down river to Jellys Ferry, and started back trolling again. Tony suddenly yells Fish On, and he caught a 20 pound. hen! On the 2nd pass through Jellys Ferry, Martin yelled Fish On, and he brought in a 26 pound hen! We then went down to Two Rock, and Jim caught a 28 pounder! Then, my deck hand, (Jerry) had a turn and caught a nice 37 pounder! Jim, Martin and Tony, each brought in 2 salmon this trip. Everyone had a great time! Arrrrr Matey’s! We got a late start today, as Tony was held up in Holiday traffic. We went to Lake California on the Sacramento River, and it was almost 3:30 P.M. by the time we got there. We started back trolling Kwick-Fish with a sardine wrap, and were getting nowhere. Then… as dusk was fast approaching, Tony yelled Fish on! After a good fight he pulled in a 25 pounder, and a short time later, the fight was on again! This time, it was a 19 lb. Buck! For a late day, with only enough time for one pass, this trip was certainly not a loss. Tony had 2 nice salmon and a big smile! Arrrrr Matey’s! The River Pirate, Ken Hoffman

I picked Jerry up this morning about 8:00 AM, as he’s not an early riser. On the way to the river, he informed me that if he couldn’t catch a 40 pounder, he didn’t want to keep any fish. Well… the fish gods were kind and delivered this 47 1/2 pounder to him. He caught 2 others, but true to his word, released them. Arrrrr Matey’s, The River Pirate, Ken Hoffman

I met this fantastic group at the hotel in Anderson, at about 5:30 AM. They followed me to the river, and with much enthusiasm, we put to the water about 6:00 AM. After a short boat ride, we got to our destination where the fish were waiting… One hit, two hits… and then the fish began to be “user friendly”. The fishing was good. The people were great, and we had a great day on the water! We can’t wait to see these folks again! Arrrrr Matey’s, The River Pirate, Ken Hoffman

This day started about 6 AM, when Dallas and I met Daniel and Darren at their motel in Anderson. After some quick intros, we were on our way to the river. When we arrived, we boarded the Vicki Ann, and headed down river, in the fog. We made our way to the first hole, where we anchored to try our luck. After about an hour, we decided to back-troll. First run, we netted one 12-14 pound salmon… a frisky bright hen. The second run produced one more hen of 30 pounds. We then worked our way down river, where we were getting debris clogging our lures, so we decided to go back up river, to the original hole where we had another hit. As we worked up the river, we had one more hit at the next hole. At this point, we decided to go up river to get in front of the fish that were moving up river. It was not until we got almost back to the ramp, when we had 3 more hits. Unfortunately… none of them stuck. By this time, with the sun going down, it was time to end the day. All in all not a bad day, with 7 or 8 hits, and 2 fish in the boat. We had fun this trip, I hope to see these guys back. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day started about 6:15 AM, when I met Paul, Mark, and Matt in Anderson. After a little fun conversation, we headed for the river. Upon our arrival, we discovered that the river was rising once more. So we boarded the Vicki Ann, and headed down river. We tossed out our glow bugs, and began fishing for trout and steelhead. Although the steelhead were not showing themselves, the trout were letting themselves be known. We worked hard for the trout, as the water was still rising, but we caught a number of fish, working on a catch and release basis. About 1:30 PM, we decided to anchor up for a while, and put the KwikFish out and see if we could entice a salmon. About 15-20 minutes later, one of the rods bent and tried to touch the water with it’s tip, but just as fast as the tip went down, the fish had already departed. We then decided to drift for some more trout, and we caught several more. The day ended about dusk. Everyone had fun, and left with great fishing memories. Arrrr Matey’s! This day began when I met Vince and his two daughters, (Shawna and Chanie) at their motel in Anderson. It was a rainy morning, but we decided to go out anyway, at least for a short while. Upon arrival at the river, we launched and boarded the Vicki Ann. We went a short distance down river, and began fishing. We caught a few small fish on the first run. On the second run, Chanie and Shawna’s rods bowed almost simultaneously, and they had two fish on, one steelhead, and one trout. We were not out for very long as the weather was getting worse, and everyone was getting wet and cold, so we decided to call it a day. Through all of the wet and cold weather, we still had lots of fun. I can’t wait to have this wonderful family back, when we can fish for a while longer and add to some great memories of fishing the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day started when we met Chris, Ann, and Jack at their motel in Anderson at 6 AM. We boarded the Vicki Ann, and headed down river with not much luck, so we fished for trout for a while, and caught a few little guys. Then we headed back up river, and finally anchored the Vicki Ann above a deep hole, where I had graphed numerous fish. Now, with our rods out, and the KwikFish dancing in the current, we sat back and engaged in conversation, while we waited for the fish to begin their show. After a wait, the cry of “Fish On” was heard, as Chris’s rod bent down to say Hello to the bottom of the river, and after about a 15 minute fight, a hefty 35 pound King made it’s way to the boat! The was a fun trip, and a really nice day on the water. Arrrr Matey’s Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

We met Josh, Sal, Mike, Lance, and Gene, at their motel in Anderson, and headed for the river. Upon our arrival, we observed that the river was rising due to the rains of the night before, and conditions were not exactly favorable, but we soldiered on. So we picked a spot, and anchored the Vicki Ann. With all rods out, and lures wagging, we were making pleasant conversation, when Mike’s rod decided to point downstream, and the cry “Fish On” was heard, and a chrome bright hen of 16 pounds made it to the boat. We fished hard for several more hours, in a few more areas, when Sal hooked a 6 pound chrome bright steelhead, on a K-16 Kwikfish. Only 2 fish to the boat this trip, but everyone had a great time on the river! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day began as I met Ed at the river around 7:30 AM, and we boarded the Vicki Ann. Ed was looking forward to this trip with much anticipation, as his work as a truck driver, had kept him from fishing for over a year. As we headed down river, and arrived at the first fishing spot, I turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and anchored. The cry of “Fish On” was heard, but it was not to be. We fished on for the next several hours with many hits in many holes, until we arrived back at the original hole where we had started. It was there, that once again, the cry of “Fish On” was heard, but this time, the hook stuck it’s prey. After about a 10 minute fight, a beautiful 40 pound hen found it’s way to the Vicki Ann, and into the live well, and the void of the previous year was now fulfilled. Ed was ecstatic! This was a great day on the river, and I hope to see Ed back a little sooner next year. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

We met Jim and his children at their Motor Home, in Anderson about 7 AM, and were soon on the river. We boarded the Vicki Ann, and the kids were full of enthusiasm. We fished hard this trip, but the water fluctuations were not with us. Jim had one take-down, but the fish soon broke away, and there were only 2 hits the whole day. The kids all had high hopes of catching fish, and their spirits were high. I felt bad for them today, as the fish were not cooperating. In spite of those misbehaving fish, these kids were smiling and laughing most of the day, and I can’t wait to have them back, for a wonderful productive day of fishing. Arrrr Matey’s! The first hole we visited did not produce ner’ a bite, so we continued on up river to the next hole. As we turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and let out our lines… WHAM, Glenn was on! Not a large fish, by Sacramento River standards, but a beautiful chrome bright hen of 12 pounds. We fished hard for the rest of the day, and had several fish on, however, these fish were theives, and stole multiple lures. All in all, we had a great day, and the fishing was good, but the little theives took some of the Pirate’s best lures. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

With stink now on the boat, we only managed 2 or 3 more hits in the next 2-3 hours, when we decided to go back up river, to a small run that I am familiar with, where we boated 2 more Sac River Kings. Not huge fish on this trip, however, nice bright silver bullets, with scales busting. They weighed in… a pair at 26, and one smaller fish of 12 pounds. A good time was had by all! Arrrr Matey’s! This day started at 5 AM, when my First Mate and I met Mike, Tim, and Jerry at their Motel, and off to the river we went, and launched the Vicki Ann. We slipped thru the darkness, and turned into the current. The depth finder was reading 3 1/2 feet, when it happened. The cry of “Fish On” rang out! Mike was now on!! After a fight of about 12 minutes, Mike boated a pretty 20 pound hen from the Sacramento River, with the sun just peeping over the hills. A few more hits, and we soldiered on, as the fish once more developed a case of lock-jaw. We tried roe and Kwick-Fish, to no avail, until we came back up river and parked on top of a pod of fish. Now it was Tim’s turn, as the line was ripped off the reel! This fish was not all that big, but it sure thought it was, and it had some shoulders on it! With the 2nd fish to the boat, the day ended, with the scores at: salmon 4, fishermen 2, but nevertheless… we had a pleasant day and caught some fish. As for me, I met some fine gentlemen, that I would fish with anytime. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day started when I met Norman, and his brother Warren, at their Motel, and off to the river we went. We launched the Vicki Ann, and our fishing trip began. The fish were rolling and everything looked good, but we couldn’t find a biter in the bunch. We fished hard, but the fish had a case of lock-jaw, and this was to be one of those days… a battle of wills… us against the fish. Along about 1 PM, we decided to find some shade, and cool down. I had the spinning gear still in the boat, from the previous trip, so we started casting for trout/salmon. It wasn’t too long before Warren hooked a large salmon, and the fight was on! The fish tore line off the tiny reel with us in Hot pursuit with the boat! About 10 minutes into the fight, the fish found a snag, and his freedom… once again to follow his destiny. It wasn’t until the day was almost over, that Norman’s rod bent, and stayed bent. Finally, the river would give up one of her beautiful returning salmon of about 18 1/2 pounds to Norman, and so… the day ended, with only one fish, but lots of great memories of the Fall Salmon Run, on the Sacramento River. This day started at 5:30 AM when my First Mate and I met Soichiro, Shinya,Yasoshi, Hiroshi, Koichiro, and Motohiro, at their Motel, and they followed us down to the river. As we headed up the river, we suddenly realized that something had been overlooked. (Fishing License’s) So, I phoned my son to obtain 6 License’s for the entire crew, and a short while later, we were fishing. That day we caught 30-40 trout, some squaw, and other varieties of fish. The following day, with everything in place, we caught more trout until just before lunch, when Soichiro cast out towards the bank, and the line went taught. A salmon had taken his single egg offering. Unfortunately, the 6 pound test soon broke, and the fish continued on it’s marathon swim up the river. Shortly after, we put a couple of Kwick-Fish out, and one of the rods went flat. The fight was on, and a beautiful 18 pound King hen, showed herself to us, and shortly joined us in the boat. After their fishing trip, they went on their way to do some sight-seeing. I hope they all had a wonderful time! It was an honor to have these fine gentlemen, who came all the way from Japan, to fish with me on the Vicki Ann, and I hope to someday have the privilege to see them again. Arrrrr Matey’s! This day started started at 5 AM, on Sept. 15th, when my First Mate and I met Mike, Joe and Charlie, at their Motel, and they followed us to the River. We fished hard, and Mike hooked the first fish of the day… a nice 40+ pound King buck made it to the boat, and found his way to the private Jacuzzi pool. Joe was next, and the cry of “Fish On” was heard! After a good fight, he led a 20+ pound hen to the waiting net, and she took her place in the private pool on the Vicki Ann. The second day, (Sept.16th) began much the same, and as time wore on, another beautiful 40+ pound King buck made it to the boat for Charlie. Several more fish won their battles for the right to meet their destiny further up the river. Another great trip with memories of good people, and good fishing on the beautiful Sacramento River. This day began when my First Mate and I, met Russell, Bruce, and Ted. We launched the Vicki Ann, and now in the water, she came to life with a rumble, and everybody made their way onboard. As we slipped out to the main-stream of the River, and headed down-stream, in about 5 minutes, I turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and the kicker came to life, and the main motor went silent. I gave the word to put ’em out! About 7-10 minutes into the day, Russell’s rod tip tried to touch the water, and the line tried to head South. The first fish had grabbed his lure! The lines cleared, and the fish came to the boat. A nice bright fish, of 14 pounds. Still on the first drift, Ted’s rod decided to follow suit, and the first run now yielded two bright Sacramento River Kings! The second run yielded the same number of Kings.. and now there were 4 fish in the boat. A few more slaps and fish on and off, until Bruce’s turn came, and he brought in another beautiful silver bullet, a hen this time! The day yielded 5 fish, between 12 and 21 pounds. A good day on the Sacramento River with 3 great guys, now came to an end. I hope to see them all back again! Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began as my First Mate Dallas, and I met Harvey and launched the Vicki Ann. We headed down river and turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and approximately 5 minutes into the day we started to drop our lures back into position, but… they didn’t make it. 2 salmon decided to slam them on the way out, at the same time! Harvey landed a beautiful 28 pound silver bullet, and the other fish found a way to shake the lure. A couple of passes later, towards the back of the hole, the rod went flat, and once again, the fight began. A 31 pound brute at one end, and Harvey at the other, with Harvey eventually becoming the Victor! The day ended, but not before 2 more kings, found their way to the boat. A 17, 23, and 28 pounder, and the Big one for the day, the 31 pounder. Seven other fish won their tug-o-war’s. What a day! 11 fish in all! Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began at 5 AM, when my First Mate, Dallas, and I met Charlie and Jeff, and off to the river we went, with the forecast calling for thunderstorms. We were fishing down-river, when the lightning decided to give us a light show, and with a conductor like we were sitting in, we decided to wait on the bank. When the clouds parted, we moved back up-river to the hole above where we took refuge for a while. Now the skies were somewhat clear, so we dropped in. As we started to drift back, Jeff’s rod went off and the cry of Fish On, was heard! A beautiful 18 pound hen came to the boat. As we prepared to make another drift through the hole, the lightning decided to come back and haunt us. This time instead of hiding, we decided to run! Faster and faster we ran up the river, with the lightning hot on our heels, until we got in sight of the trailer, at which time the lightning was striking all around the ramp area, so once again, to the bank we went, and everybody out, as we waited out the storm. About a half hour to 45 minutes later, the skies began to clear. So, once again we decided to fish. The first run didn’t produce anything, but I was sure that there was some fish in this hole, so we made another pass. Halfway through, it happened, and the cry Fish On, was heard once again! As Charlie and the fish battled, the skies were cooperating, and the fish finally made it’s way to the boat. An 18 pound buck this time. What a day! Catching fish, being chased by lightning, and being in the center of a light show… and the last fish caught within sight of the trailer. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began about 6:30 AM, as I met Dave, Diana, and their little toy poodle, (Elliott) in Anderson. We said our Hello’s and made our way to the river. My First Mate Dallas, tied the baits on the lures, and our fishing day began. We fished for about 10 minutes before the first slap, but that’s all it was, as if the fish were saying to us, “Excuse me, I am on my way to an appointment and I can’t be bothered with play right now”. So, we fished on down-river, thru hole after hole, as the fish jumped and rolled around us. The day was warming up, and the fish remained cool, going about their business on their march up-stream. We had covered about 20 miles of river, and the hours were slipping by. The other boats that had been fishing the area were leaving, and I, like so many others, was without fish… but we weren’t ready to give up yet, so we started working back up-river. The first hole we came to on the way back up, we put the lures down and began to drift backwards, when I noticed a lost lure floating. Dallas then manned the net, and I slipped to the starboard to retrieve the wayward plug. With the plug now in safe keeping, I jogged the Vicki Ann back into position, and the rod slammed down, but it still was not to be. With the water getting low, we ran back up-river. I hate to give up, so I suggested one more stop. We found a spot devoid of boats, and started our drift, when the rod went off one more time, and this time everything went RIGHT, as Dave and the fish were now in a battle of WILLS! A 42.5 pound buck finally made it’s way to the box, and all was well. We had a pleasant day on the beautiful Sacramento River, and capped it off with a nice fish. What a way to end the day, with the trailer in sight. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day started at 5 AM, when I met Jim, Joyce, and their little dog, (Piper) at their motel in Anderson. They had brought their own boat, as Jim wanted to learn this part of the river before venturing out on their own. Our first stop was the Old Mouth, and about 5 minutes in, Jim’s rod flattened out. With a few head shakes, it went still. Then one more slap at the next hole, and things went quiet. We fished our way down the river until we ended up at the Canyon where the words Fish On, rang out again, and this time, the hooks found their mark, and the line stayed tight! Jim would gain line, then the fish would take it back, and finally with the fish spent of all it’s strength, it made it’s way into my waiting net… a beautiful 25 pound hen! The rest of the day stayed on the quiet side, but we all had a great time, and Jim caught his first salmon out of his new 22 ft. jet boat! Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip started like most others, as I met Jim and Martin at their Motel in Anderson at 5 AM, and off to the river we went. But… what a trip this proved to be, as the day progressed. We put the Vicki Ann in the water, and slipped across to a sand bar to bait up, but on this particular morning, we were in for a special visit by one of the locals. A juvenile Canadian Goose appeared on the port side of the Vicki Ann. As we moved out into the current, turned the main motor off, and started the kicker motor, the goose was swimming beside us. We fished, and (George,as he was affectionatley by the fishing group) the goose, swam… until he found his place on the swim platform at the back of the boat, where he remained until we decided to head down the river. I shoo-ed the goose off the platform, and we were off. 5, 10, 15, miles we traveled, finally settling down, and turning the Vicki Ann back into the current. Then, as we were fishing, a bird on the wing appeared up-river, and as it drew closer, we could see that it was none other than George. As we all watched, George proceeded to land to the port side of us, swim around the back of the Vicki Ann, and once more roosted on the swim platform. As we slipped back, the cry of Fish On was heard! George came into the boat, and was now on the engine cover watching us as we fought and landed a beautiful 28 pound Buck King. After we took care of the fish, George just sat and watched us. After that, he jumped down into the boat and into the center of a seat, where he sat for quite a while, then jumped off the side of the boat, dunked himself once, and returned to the comfort of the swim platform. We decided to head back up-river, and George found his way back into the Vicki Ann, and took the ride back up-river. One more fish came into the boat, with George’s approval. Five hits, 2 fish in the boat, at 28 and 28 1/2 pounds, and one goose. This was a strange day, and no one would have believed this story, had we not taken the photos of this happening. People in passing boats were taking photos as they went by. This story was written this way, at the request of Jim and Martin. They had a great time, and will be coming back soon. Arrrrr Matey’s! This trip began at 5 AM, as I met Obie, Mitchell, and Allen, and we headed for the river. With the crisp morning air nipping our ears heading up the river, I settled the Vicki Ann down, started the kicker, and turned the main motor off. We began to slip back slowly, down the river, and about two thirds through the run, the first cry came… Fish On!! Mitchell was now engaged in the first scurmish of the day, but it wasn’t meant to be, as the fish threw the lure back at us. The second was much the same, as were a few more hits and misses. By this time, the fish were ahead on points: Fish 4. Fisherman 0. But… that was about to change, as Allen was now up to bat. Would the hooks hold, or would the fish once again win the battle? Yes, they held! A beautiful 23 pound fish was hauled into the boat. A couple of passes later, another one made it’s way to the Vicki Ann. So, we moved once more, and Mitchell was on the field. As he was maneuvering through his opponents with the precision of a world class athlete, he kicked and scored! The river had given him his Trophy for a job well done. We moved back up-river, and Allen joined a fish in another battle, that he finally won, as this silver beauty was tossing and turning trying to take it’s Trophy, Allen coaxed her to the waiting net. The day ended with 4 fish to the boat, and 7 more declaring themselves as Victors. We put the Vicki Ann on the bunks of her trailer and put it in dry dock for the night. It was a real pleasure to have the oppourtunity to share this day with Obie, Allen, and Mitchell, with many memories of good fishing, and I hope to see them many more times in the future. This trip began at 5 AM, when Dallas and I met Brittany and Larry at their Motel in Anderson. These two were celebrating, as Brittany had planned this trip as a surprise for Larry, so we talked for a few minutes, and off to the river we went. When we arrived at the launch ramp, it was obvious that the river had been dropped. This was not a good sign, as these fish do not take kindly to changes in their environment. As a result, not much went on this trip. We fished hard, all day, (and I’d like to say, that Brittany is a fine angler herself) but the fish were just not co-operating, and we went fishless. Even I can admit to a bad fishing day, now and then, as no one can always predict what these fish will do, but these two will be coming back, and next time… they will both be showing off their catches for the day. I’m hoping to see them back before the salmon season is over, and as you can see in their photo, they were still smiling. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip started at 5:00 AM, when Dallas (my first mate) and I met John, Kevin, Joel, Chris, and JohnRoss at their motel, and they followed us to the river. We were loading the ice chest into the Vicki Ann, when John realized he had forgotten his fishing license at the motel, and left to retrieve it. As we headed up to the first hole above the ramp to return after one drift, to my surprise… a boat came roaring up the river and settled in just below us, and John was waving at us from the other boat, (Man, he must have flown!) and now the group was complete. As we hit all the holes down-stream, while marking fish, there were no biters. (Another case of fish with locked-jaws.) This was probably due to the recent storms that had been moving through the area over the last few days. Finally I saw a few active fish in a hole after we made our way back upriver, and decided to sit on top of them, and our luck was about to change.

It was John first. The rod went off, and the fish’s dance began. The fish decided to take a swim in the next hole, downriver… but John talked him out of it. The fight lasted for about 15 minutes, with both combatants not wanting to give an inch, but finally the fish surrendered. A bright male of about 18 pounds found his way to the boat, and into his Private Pool with a Jacuzzi Pump. Two passes later, Kevin had a hit, or should I say, a pull from the space shuttle taking off. Unfortunately the stages separated, and the fish continued on it’s way. It was now after noon, and Joel’s turn. The fish had inhaled his lure, and they were now engaged in a tug-o-war… with Joel on one end, and the fish on the other, back and forth they went, to see who would be the victor of the line. Joel finally wore her down, and she too, decided to come to the Private Pool provided. Now, with a couple of more passes, and a few more close calls, JonRoss was on, and the stage was set. The fish ran and jumped one time, like an actor who had a case of stage fright, and only wanted to leave the set, but JonRoss was standing his ground, and finally conviced her to come to the Pool Party for the leading actors. About 19 more pounds for the Vicki Ann to take back with her. Now the time had come to depart the water, and get ready for the next day.

This day (Aug. 5th) began with the same group following Dallas and I from their motel to the river. We headed up the river again, and dropped in. On the second pass, Chris entered a wrestling match for the World Title. Chris delivered the first move of a devastating cross-body, as the fish turned sideways in the current, and then came the counter-move, the fish… with an arm-bar trying to dislodge Chris’s shoulder. The match continued almost the full length of the hole, until Chris put his finishing move on, and I… the referee, declared Chris the Victor, and handed him the Title Belt.

Then, the bite went off, so we moved up the river a little ways with not much luck. We tried a few more holes, and had a few more pull-downs, and it was getting harder and harder to find any user-friendly fish. The guys were getting a little tired, and the fish were just not co-operating, but, I had one more trick up my sleeve… a small shallow run that I have caught many fish from. The guys dropped their lures in, and the Vicki Ann began to slide back slowly through the shallow water as everyone was watching the bottom of the river getting ever closer to the boat, towards the bottom of the hole, and all but 2 rods were put back in the rod lockers. I had Dallas at the helm, and I instructed him to back off the throttle, when someone asked if these fish ever hit on the way in, and as he sat back… his question was answered. Fish On!! The fish was on a tear! The lines were cleared, and the battle started raging. About 10 minutes into the battle, the fish decided to head South for good, and leave us all behind. I slipped the boat into reverse, but it was too late. The fish had straightened the hook out in it’s jaw, and what a way to end the day, but this group was just teriffic, and we all had a great time. I hope to see all of them back next year.

The August 1st salmon opening on the upper river started with a BANG!

This trip started like many other trips with Jim and Tony, only this time, they brought Janet and Lenny. They drove to the Gravel Bar where the Vicki Ann was waiting, as I had been scouting the evening before. As everybody boarded the Vicki Ann, the motor came to life, and we headed to a spot that has produced many, many fish over the years. This spot is not deep, but the fish like it just the same. We turned into the current and dropped the lures out behind us, and started backing. We had backed only about 10 feet when the rod at portside-middle, flattened, and the reel started loosing line. A swing and a miss, so we continued our decent. About halfway down the drift, Jim’s rod followed suit. Fish On! Fish On!! Everybody cleared their lines, and the fight began! Back and forth between fisherman and fish… but finally the King was defeated. It only took about 15 minutes… and a bright fish of 23 pounds was in the net. A few more holes and a few more swings, and the fish were winning. The sun was high in the sky now, and the cry went out once again. Fish On!! The lines were cleared, and this time it was Janet’s turn. 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and the battle raged on. The fish began to surcome, and started to come peacefully to the boat… a very large fish, looked to be 40 to 45 pounds, and then with a flick of his tail, and one last ditch effort, under the boat he went, as the line went slack. He had keel-hauled the line and taken his spoils with him. He was now the proud owner of a bright new lure, and probably showing it off to all of his friends!

We retied the leader and put another lure on, and headed up for another drift. We’d just put the lures back in, and Jim once again announced Fish On! This time the fish ended up in the net. The day ended as we pulled to the campsite, and it wasn’t a bad day, with 2 fish in the box, 9 fish on, and 3 slaps, and 1 more day to go.

The next day (Aug. 2nd) started under cloudy, rainy skies, and the fish had shut off. We fished until 10:30, and the lightening decided to join the party, so to the bank we went. Everyone went into town until the storm cleared, and the rain had stopped falling on our parade. About 3:30, we headed off again, to try to pry these fishs’ mouth’s open. 3 hits later, and Tony was hooked up, and the fight was on again! One more 24 pound Sac River King had succumbed to the pressure. Finally, the day had it’s way… not much fishing time left, but we caught one fish, and as all anglers know… Fishing Is Fishing. We had a good time anyway, and everyone went their separate ways, with memories of fun and fishing in the Sacramento River.

This morning began at 5:15 AM as Tom, Kevin, and Tony met me at the dock for their second day of fishing. The day went much the same as yesterday, as the fish were in the lock-jaw mode. So, we headed down river. As we were backing down through the Lava Beds, I heard, Fish On… but it wasn’t meant to be. After a vicious strike, and a line stripping run, it was over, as the line went limp. The fish had taken the Kwik-Fish that once was at the end of the line. Once again, the fish had won, and returned to it’s upstream swim. We were working hard, and the fish were laughing. Then, a few more bites and misses, and a few more holes later, Kevin was just waking up from a power nap, and his rod went off again, and this time he made it stick… a beautiful 25 pounder succumbed to the relentless pressure applied by Kevin! One out of six in the boat, reluctantly I docked the Vicki Ann, and the guys disembarked. We had some good times and comraderie that only the river can provide. I hope to see Tom, Kevin and Tony back aboard, for some more good times, and conquering of the Kings of the Sacramento River. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began as I met Tom, Kevin, and Tony at their hotel, and off to the river we went. The morning air was filled with electricity, and I mean literally. Luckily, as we pulled to the boat ramp, the sky had cleared, but was still overcast. We were still able to fish in safety, so away we went with the Vicki Ann taking us down the river. We settled in about 4 miles down the river, and I turned the boat into the current, and the lines went out. The first drift produced nothing, as did about the next hour and a half, when Kevin said, “Fish On”! As we were clearing our lines, the fish suddenly decided to do something else, and left as quickly as it had come. Tom hooked up some time later, and the line was leaving the reel as if the fish had caught a southbound train while going full speed. The fight was on!! Tom would make a little headway, and the fish would take it back, and as the fight wore on, the fish was getting tired, and so was Tom. After about a 25 minute fight, the fish finally came to the net… a beautiful 36 1/2 pounder. We fished for a while longer, and the sky started to darken again, and the lightning was getting closer, so I moved the boat up the river, and the lightning started closing in a little, so I brought the Vicki Ann to the dock. After a while, the storm had passed, and the Vick Ann swept us down the river once again. This time.. roe was the call, and Kevin was on! It wasn’t long before the river delivered another 34 pounder to us, and the day came to an end with only 2 to the boat. Everyone enjoyed this trip, and the guys went back to their hotel, with another day of fishing on their minds. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

Class is in today…
I met Robin and Fergal about 8:30 this morning, at the Antler’s Resort Marina. As Fergal came walking down the stairs, Robin was waiting by their car. We conversed a minute or two, and then boarded the Vicki Ann. The hour was a little late for me to head to the Goose Neck, as the boat traffic on Shasta Lake was already becoming crowded. I was hoping for a few fish to come our way, even though this day was scheduled to be a learning experience. So, we headed further up the Sacramento River Arm up to the 5-mile an hour Buoy instead. Well… that wasn’t stopping folks from speeding by us like there was a fire chasing them, so we headed back towards the Marina, and the down riggers went out, and the lines went down. The first fish came at about 40 feet… a little spotted bass of approximately 11/2 pounds. Now, with a few fish under out belt, we switched from trolling to casting, and about 11:00 AM, and a few more fish, we found a shady spot to begin our lessons, and cast some fly rods, as neither Robin or Fergal had ever cast a spinning rod or a fly rod before, and had requested that I teach them both some basics. After about 30-45 minutes, they were both casting a fly rod. These two were enjoying every minute, casting with so much enthusiasm, and learning so quickly, that I believe they will both become fine fly casters, and will always enjoy fishing.

Now it was time for a dip in the lake, as the mercury was pushing 110 degrees, and we spent a while hiding under the I-5 Bridge, and a Railroad Bridge. The day ended about 4:15, when we docked at the Antler’s Resort.

Robin and Fergal are planning to be married in two months, and I think they make a lovely couple. This was a fun day with two great folks, that I enjoyed having aboard my boat, and I hope to see them again.

This day started at about 4:45 AM. Barry arrived at the River Rest Resort while I was having coffee with Dallas, my 1st Mate for the day, and Thom was not long behind. We said our Hello’s, and took the short walk to the dock where the Vicki Ann was waiting to take us to the start of another Salmon Season.

As we were idling down the river, the air was brisk, and anticipation filled the boat. We rounded the last corner to find the hole that had been quiet just the day before, had now become a boat parking lot. As we took our place in line, I decided not to park at this lot. No… instead we would go back upstream to the Red Barn and solitude, but the fish gods were not amused, so it was time to move again… down and around the parking lot, and down to the bottom of the parking lot, and bliss, once again. First drift, second drift, third drift… didn’t produce ner’ a nibble, but on the fifth drift that was about to change, and the cry of “FISH ON” rang out as the line on Thom’s reel was pulled off and the fish was headed south. Finally… to the boat and netted, was a 28 pounder! By this time it was already 9:30 AM. At 10:30 AM, the second fish grabbed Barry’s plug and tried to rip the rod from it’s perch in the rod holder where it was lying. After 10-15 minutes, another 28 pound beauty was laid to rest. Then Thom was on once again. The line was being pulled off his reel, and the river gave up another bright 26 pound fish!

So, as early afternoon rolled around, with deadlines to meet, Thom had to be on his way. As he reluctantly disembarked from the Vicki Ann, he took with him 2 of the river’s beauty’s, and I hope some great memories too.

Then Barry and I decided to take a break for a while, as the sun was high above us, and the air was now on the warm side, but Barry had only 1 fish, and there were fish in the river to be caught, so after our break, off we went again! The hole where we had caught the other fish, now looked like a ghost town. So, away we went up the river. The boat finally settled, the lines went out, and the boat began to slip backwards down the river. Then it happened! Fish, fish, fish… and the stage was set once again. Barry at one end, and the fish at the other, and line being peeled off the reel. The rod bowed over, and the line was as tight as an over-tightened guitar string, with each combatant not wanting to give an inch! Finally the fish yielded and came to the net… another beauty of 29 pounds!

With our quotas met, the day would now come to a close, with memories of another great day of fishing imprinted upon our minds.

This trip began about 6:00 AM, as I brought the Vicki Ann to the fantail of Zack’s houseboat, that was nestled in the Blue Canyon Cove on Lake Shasta.

Zack, his 9 year old son, and Jerry, knew the bite was going to be tough today, as we’d had 2 days of a full moon, and the fish had been feeding all night. We tried numerous baits… to no avail. Not even minnows would pry some of these fishes’ mouth’s open. So, it became necessary to cover a large amount of water, and the trolling gear was now going to have to be employed. As we started trolling, the rod snapped out of the downrigger, and the first fish came to the boat… not too big, but a pretty little spotted bass, caught by Zack’s son, as were the 2nd and 3rd fish. Then Zack and Jerry got in on the action, and Zack brought in 2 more on the same lure at the same time, and a few more came to the boat for the trio. Unfortunately… nothing of much size today, but the guys were in good spirits. The air was getting very warm, and we fished about 5 to 7 miles of the Pit Arm from the Arbuckle Flat. This trip ended a little early as the little guy was getting tired, and I dropped them off at their house boat. I hope to see this trio again sometime, and I’ll be looking forward to another trip with them in the future.

This trip was scheduled for June 18th. However, I had driven down on the afternoon of the 17th, to locate the “Best Spots” for the upcoming trip, as I hadn’t fished that area for about 3 days. Upon my arrival at the dock, where I was going to pick up one of my friends to accompany me, I found that Jerry and Tom had already arrived. Jerry came down to the dock and said, “You must be the River Pirate!” So, since Jerry and Tom had already arrived, and Don and Jim were on the way, and only about 15 minutes out, I decided to start the trip a little early, and we shoved off in the late afternoon, and headed down the river. We anchored up about a mile and a half down stream. Shortly after, Jim hooked up, and the fun began! We boated a few fish, and had a few laughs, and it grew late quickly, and everyone went to rest, looking forward to the next day. Early on the morning of the 18th, down the river we went again. A few minutes later… a Favorite Spot, and there they were! Fish-a-plenty… soon biting, jumping, and fighting like little trojans! All were catching fish, and the count was climbing! About 11:30 AM, it was back to the dock for some lunch, and a little nap. We hit the river again about 4:00 PM. The anchor bit into the river bottom, and Jerry hooked up first this time. The fun went on until about 8:30 PM, and we’d boated 1 trout, and 40-45 shad, from 11/2, up to about 4 pounds! This was a great trip, chock full of memories, with 4 fine Gentlemen. Arrrrr Matey’s! Once again, Mr. Mike, Gregg, and I hit the water. I decided to go down stream, and we set the anchor. I told Mr. Mike, “This is a beautiful morning to take a peek over the side of the boat, with the sun just in the right spot.” The fish lit up like dancers in sequined costumes, being hit by a spotlight! As the lines trailed behind the boat, suddenly… the show was interrupted by one who wanted that spotlight… jumping and dancing on the end of one of the lines! 30-40 fish later, Mr. Mike and Gregg decided to go up to their room for a nap, and about an hour and a half later, we decided to go for a late lunch, and then we were back to the water. Once again, the fish were taking our offerings, and more and more joined, from 11/2 to about 4 pounds. As the day ended, and the combatants were tiring, and so were we. So, we said our good byes again. This was another great day, with a couple of nice guys. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began about 6:30 AM, when I met Mr. Mike, and Gregg at the Dock. We chatted for a few, they took their seats, and off we went. As the boat settled and moved into position, the anchor caught, and the lines trailed behind. Soon… the lines grew tight, and Mr. Mike was the first to SCORE! Gregg was next to SCORE! One right after the other, the fight went on and on! The count grew and the day was growing shorter, as we continued to laugh and joke around. The light faded, and the sturgeon rod showed it’s face. The cast delivered the bait to the bottom of the river, and it wasn’t long before the tip of the rod was tapping… a swing and miss. This was a great day, with 43 shining fish, of 11/2 – 4 pounds. The hour was growing later, so we went back to the dock, and said our good byes until tomorrow. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

I met my clients, Rob and Jeff at Redding Airport Air Tronics, as Rob taxied his plane up to the hanger to have his Auto Pilot repaired. After some quick intros, we headed down the road… with shad on our minds. We hit the water, and the boat came to life, and after a short ride down river, the boat settled. We anchored down, and after a few, the river gave up it’s first fish of the day… a nice silver bullet of about 1 1/2 pounds. We then decided to try a little fly fishing, and Rob SCORED! Then, after a short ride up river, once again the anchor slips into the water and the rope comes tight to the boat. It wasn’t long after that, the combatants came to the colliseum to take their turn to audition for us at the end of the lines. They battled, one after the other, as they made their way to our grasp… with about 20-25 fish from 11/2 to 3 pounds, to the boat. The day had to end early, as Rob and Jerry had to return to the airport and wing their way back home. Not as many fish succumbed to us as I would have liked, as we had to leave the water before the late bite, but all in all, it was still a great day, and we all had fun. Arrrrr Matey’s! This trip began on a sunny, but cool morning in May, here in Northern California. I met my clients, Terry and Robert at the boat ramp about 7:00 AM, and we soon started up the river. As we dropped into the first hole, Terry and Robert spotted a Bald Eagle perched in a tree, enjoying life and watching for some breakfast to come along. Well… no biters in the hog hole, so we moved up to a small run. It didn’t take long, and Terry was hooked up to a beautiful rainbow trout. That drift ended with 3 fish saying Hello. The second drift, much the same as the first, found 3 or 4 more trout who had come out to play with us. Then… more fish, and a couple of osprey flying overhead with their lunch, freshly caught, and a couple of shad later… the day was growing short. As Robert had made plans for later that afternoon, this was a short day. I wish these brothers could have stayed longer, but we said our Good Byes, in hopes that we would get another chance to fish together sometime soon. Although short, it was a fun and eventful day, with some great memories. Arrrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate *Photo: Courtesy of Robert. Thank you.

Again, I met Tom, Ilia, Maddy, and Ethan at their Motel, but this time, about an hour earlier, as we had a little longer drive ahead of us today. We put to the water about 7:00 AM. We went just shy of a gravel bar, and as I anchored, the fish were waiting. It wasn’t long before Tom hooked the first shad of the day, a nice 3 pounder. As he fought the fish, it flashed like a mirror under the water, and as it came to the surface, it’s beautiful iridescent colors could be seen, and… Maddy at the ready… SCOOP! The fish was in the boat! Many more fish followed as we laughed and joked, and Maddy was always at the ready. As the day came to a close, I found myself wishing that it was noon again, so I could, if only for a little while… continue to enjoy the company of this family. We caught about 50 shad, with a few above 4 pounds, and we had another a great day! I sincerely hope to be able to enjoy the company of this family again.

A special note:
Little Maddy stole this old Pirate’s heart. She is 5 years old, and very bright. She loves every minute of fishing, and she’s one the sweetest children you’ll ever get a chance to meet. Her little brother Ethan, just 18 months old, was having lots of fun too, and they were both a pleasure to have aboard my boat.

I met Tom and his wife Ilia, and their two children, Maddy and Ethan, at their Motel at about 6:30 AM. It was a beautiful morning, at about 59 degrees. We headed to the upper stretches of the Sacramento River that flows through the Heart of Redding. We arrived at the river about 7:00 AM, and launched about 30 feet into the first drift, when Ilia hooked her first fish. As the fish made it’s second jump, the glow bug comes unlodged, and the line goes limp once again. Next it was Maddy’s turn, and with the help of her Father, she boats a 1 1/2 pound rainbow trout, with Ethan watching from his Mother’s arms. Tom, Ilia, and Maddy boated many more trout during the next few hours, and it was time for a short break, to replenish the ice in the cooler. So, we made a stop in one of the inlets of the river. As we were returning to the river, Tom threw a rattle rap, that I had tied to one of the rods, as many of these inlets hold largemouth bass. As we were coming to the inlet channel, Tom says, “There’s one!” Shortly, a 2 pound bass found it’s way back to the boat. Then back to the river… and more trout. As the day grew to a close, it happened! Tom was on one of our big fish, at 10 to 12 pounds! As it jumped and danced for us, Maddy was at ready with the net, and the fish made a final run. Unfortunately it was under the boat, and the leader touched on the rail… SNAP!! It was gone… With the sun beginning to fall, we decided to take on more drift, and one more fish made it’s way to the boat, as if to say good-bye. This was a great day with great people!! I met Mike and Todd at their motel about 6:30 AM. We shared some pleasant conservation as we drove out to Lake Shasta for their first day of fishing. A little after 7:00 AM, we were on the lake, and were soon hunting one of it’s many arms, with not much luck. As the day went on, we tried a few other spots. Time was passing with fish on the graph, and we offered a variety of baits, but the bite was off. This did not deter these true fishermen, as we soldiered on. A fish came here and there, but the fishing was slow. We finished the day with not many fish in the boat, and truly not that big one we had hoped for, but we can still recall the memories of our fishing trip, and a nice day out on Lake Shasta. The second day started much the same, but this time, we were off to the Sacramento River for some catch and release trout fishing. Shortly after we launched the boat, and started out, Mike hooked up with a nice little rainbow, and soon after that, Todd followed suit. As the day went on, Mike continued to hook up, with Todd, following a little behind, and chuckling over his earlier statement that his Dad would surely do this. All together, we caught about 20-25 fish weighing about 11/2-3 pounds… nothing big, but as the day drew to a close, with the combatants of the day in their perspective corners, the fish went their way, and we went ours, maybe to meet again at some other time, to enjoy another encounter. As we worked through 3 or 4 more holes, we decided to move back up river to another hole, and anchor up. With all the lures back in, it was only a short while until the the cry of “Fish On” was heard! Otto’s rod had touched the water, and he was now fighting with the first fish of the day. After seeing the fish for the first time, we threw the buoy over, and the chase was on! After about 30 minutes, Otto boated a nice bright 50.6 pound Sacramento River King! Going back to our hot spot, it wasn’t too long before Lawrence’s rod took a dive, and he was now battling another bright Sac River salmon. With the battle won, Lawrence boated a beautiful 41.4 pound salmon! Now with 2 Big salmon in the Jacuzzi, it was now Bill’s turn. As time passed, Bill hooked the last fish of the day, and he soon boated a Sac River King, of appox. 15 pounds! As Gary didn’t boat a fish today, he is anticipating a Big catch for tomorrow. This day began when I met Mike, Shane and his son Blaise, at the Hotel in Anderson, and soon we were off to the river. This was one of the days that the Old River Pirate enjoys most of all, when a youngster is introduced to the sport of fishing. Today produced 4 fish, and 2 of them were caught by Blaise, at only 5 years of age. In my mind, I believe that this little guy should hold the River Pirate’s Junior Top Angler of the Year Award. The largest fish weighed in at 25.3 pounds, and the smallest was 10 pounds. We all had lots of fun this trip, and I hope to see everyone back sometime soon!

Today was the last day of a great 4-day fishing adventure, and as we headed for the river, we all wished that it wouldn’t end. On this day, we slipped the Vicki Ann into the river once again, and headed down stream. The first hole produced 0 fish, so we moved down to the second hole. This hole produced 2 fish, in the 12 – 14 pound range. Then the bite went cold. It wasn’t until we dropped to the lower end of this hole, that we again said “Fish On!” This time it was a beautiful bright hen of 40.7 pounds! What a terrific 4-day adventure for Steve and Jim! I can’t wait to have them back for some more great fishing on the Sacramento River, here in Northern California! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

We then moved to the top of the hole, for our second pass. At the very end of the run, Dean hooked a nice bright 36 pound Sac River salmon. On the third pass, in the middle of the run, another beautiful 30 pound king came to the boat. After several more passes, Tom hooked a nice 20 pound salmon, and then Rich was dancing all around the boat, from point A to Point B, trying to find the best place to catch a fish. Within the next hour, at the end of the run, Tracey yelled out “Fish On!” He was now fighting a 23 pound king salmon, that was brought to the Vicki Ann, and it’s friends, in the waiting Jacuzzi. It was now later afternoon, and we decided to call it a day. As we put the boat on the trailer, it was time to clean the fish, and after that was done, we talked for a few minutes, and then one of the guys whispered something to Dallas, and the FUN began! This trip began when I met Ric and Marc at the Hotel in Anderson, and we were soon on our way to the river. Upon arrival, we launched the Vicki Ann, and headed up river. We settled her down, and put out our lures, however, before the last lure was in position, it was “Fish On!” Ric was now fighting his first Sac River King in the first morning light. He finally subdued this fish, and it made it’s way to the Jacuzzi, on the Vicki Ann. A nice bright fish of 25 pounds! We then placed our lures back in the water, and continued down the hole. It was not long after, that another rod took a dive, but it was not to be. We made several more passes through the hole, until the boat traffic became too much, and turned the fish off. Upon arrival at the second hole, we put our lures in the water, and started to back down. It wasn’t long before another rod doubled over in the morning sun, however this time, the fish had a trophy, and departed to show all of his friends. Further down this run, once again, it was “Fish On!” The line was singing, and the fish was headed down river. This was a large fish! Unfortunately, he made a leap to freedom, and the lure began to dance once more in the current. Over the rest of the day, we had a few more hits, with fish on, fish off, but on the last run of the last hole, once again it was “Fish On!” This fish raced across the river to a predetermined snag, of his own choosing, to win the Trophy for the day. He jumped and leaped showing us the lure, as if to say, “This Tropy is Mine!” This was a fun trip, with lots of fish on and off, but only one 25 pound fish was caught. This trip began when I met Jack and Carol in Anderson. We said our Hello’s, and we were soon off to the river. Upon arrival we launched the Vicki Ann and headed up river, to one of my favorite little holes. We were soon back trolling with our KwikFish fluttering in the currents of the river. On the first run, we had no fish, but that would soon change. Our second run produced a cry of “Fish On” from Jack! He was now embroiled in his first fight with a Sacramento King. A beautiful 30 pound hen, found it’s way to the boat, and the waiting Jacuzzi. Having put the fish safely away, I started the main on the Vicki Ann, and headed back to the top. About half way through, the cry was once again heard… but, this time it was Carol. She soon overcame the powerful pulling of the King, and soon it too, found it’s way to the Vicki Ann, and the waiting Jacuzzi. This time it was a 25 pound hen. With this run complete, once more we made our way back up to the top of the hole. With our plugs in, the stage was now set, and once again Carol cried “Fish On!” This time, not a large fish, but a nice 12 pound King came to the boat. Two more passes, without a hit, but on the third, Jack once again yelled “Fish On”, and a 14 pounder found it’s way to the boat, and it’s mates, waiting patiently in the Jacuzzi, aboard the Vicki Ann. With all the fish caught, we made our way back to the ramp, and slid the Vicki Ann back onto the trailer, for a move up river, and some Sacramento trout. Upon arrival, we placed the Vicki Ann back into the water, but this time, we headed down river just a short ways. Jack, again was the first to get hooked up, with Carol not far behind. We caught a few trout, and the day ended when we said our Good Byes in Anderson. This was a great day of fishing, with lots of fun and laughter throughout. I hope to see these two back again soon! As we made our run, the cry of “Fish On” was heard again! But, as the fish got closer, we realized that it was a nice rainbow trout. As we put our lures back in, it wasn’t but a few seconds later that Paul’s rod touched the water again. This time, it was nice little King salmon, of about 10 pounds. On our third pass, another King salmon was brought to the Vicki Ann, to join it’s friends in the waiting Jacuzzi. As the day went on, we moved up and down the river, in an effort to find the fourth fish. We then decided to make a long run up the river, and dropped our lines in, and soon the cry was heard “Fish On” as Pat’s rod bent to the water! This trip began when I met John, Pete, and their sons, JB and Nico at the Hotel in Anderson. We were soon on our way to the river. We slid the Vicki Ann off of the bunks of the trailer, into the waiting waters of the Sac River. Soon we were all aboard, and preparing for the day. As we ran up the River to our first stop of the day, everybody was in high spirits, and the 2 boys could not wait! Soon, the moment arrived, and we came off plane at our destination. Moments later, with our lures in the water, we began our first run. It wasn’t long before the first slap came, but just a slap. It wasn’t until almost the end of the run that those famous words were heard, “Fish On!” Nico was now fighting the first fish of the day. A nice bright Sacramento King, that soon found it’s way to the waiting Jacuzzi aboard the Vicki Ann. The second pass yielded another fish for JB, fighting hard in the morning’s rising sun, that also found it’s way to the Jacuzzi, to join it’s friend aboard the Vicki Ann. On the third pass, about half way through, the rod went off, and the line went limp. The sacrificial lure is now one of the Sac River King’s Trophy’s to show off to all of it’s friends. On the fourth run, as the Vicki Ann was decending down river, John’s rod went off with a Crash! He too, mastered the fish, and brought it to the Vicki Ann to join it’s Comrades. Due to boat traffic, we then moved out of this hole, and proceeded down stream. Through several holes, and several slaps, the boat traffic had started to subside, so I decided to go back to the hole in which we started. The second run of this session, Pete’s rod tip had now almost touched the water, and the cry of “Fish On” was heard once more! A little bit larger fish, of about 18-20 pounds, leaping and frolicking everywhere trying to dislodge the lure, however, he would soon surrender to the relentless pressure placed upon him, by Pete. This day ended with 4 fish to the boat, and approx. 5 hits, and no errors. This was a great trip! The Dad’s were great, and these kids were tons of fun! I hope to see them all back to fish with me again real soon! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began when I met Rueben and Inez at the Hotel in Anderson, and we were soon on our way to the river. Upon arrival at the river, we launched the Vicki Ann, and prepared to go up river, but I decided to drop in at the launch, and try one pass. A couple of minutes into the pass, Rueben’s rod went off with a BANG! “Fish On!” Although it was short lived, Rueben had now experienced just how hard a Sac River King can pull! We then headed up to our next stop. At this stop, we had 2 slaps, and 1 fish on, and off. I then made the decision to stay on top of these fish at this hole. Then it was Inez’s turn to experience the pulling power of these fish, as her rod went off, and she was soon embroiled in the fight that she had come for. As she fought, the fish would take and give line almost at will. As I chased the fish down, you could see her face begin to glow, as the big male Sac River King got closer. Finally he was netted, and hauled aboard the Vicki Ann, and bound for the waiting Jacuzzi. We fished for a while longer, and then it was once again Rueben’s turn, as his rod went off, and he was now fighting another Sac River King. As the fight continued, we thought that he was going to take it all the way to the boat… however, the fish had other ideas, and leapt to the sky. About 4 feet into his flight, the lure was dislodged from his jaw, and sending the lure flying back at the Vicki Ann, as if to say, “Here, I don’t want this!” We had a few more chances, however, the fish decided not to grace us with their company. Today, Inez took the seat of honor, with a beautiful 30+ pound King! We all had a great time this trip. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began when I met Mike, Charlie, Joseph and Larry at the Hotel in Anderson. Soon we were on our way to the river, and launching the Vicki Ann. We headed up river to our first stop. We threw out our lures, and began to back troll. We had one hit, but no fish, and I knew that today would be tough. We fished for a couple of hours before the first fish came, a small fish, of only about 8 pounds, for Joseph. We then had a few more hits, with fish on, and fish off. Finally, Charlie’s rod went off with a BANG! A beautiful 35+ pounder found it’s way to a waiting net, and a happy Charlie! We fished for quite a while longer, but to no avail. End of day 1. Day 2 started when I again met them at the Hotel, and headed to the river. This day was going to be the toughest of the two, as the wind had already started to pick up. Once on the water, it was apparent that we would have to work very hard for anything that we’d get, as winds of approx. 30 miles per hr. sustained, and 40 mile per hr. gusts’ were buffetting the Vicki Ann. As the kicker screamed, the Vicki Ann slowly made her decent down each and every run, with great ease. However, the fish were on another page. Although we had about 6 hits, of fish on, and fish off, we only managed one small fish for Larry today, and then our day ended. This was not the norm for this time of year, but it can happen. Even though… we still had a good time fishing, laughing and joking throughout the trip. These guys were real troupers! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

The first day of this trip began when I met Chip and John at the Hotel in Anderson. These guys were excited about salmon fishing, and we were quickly on our way to the water. When we arrived, we launched the Vicki Ann, and headed up river. Soon we were at our first stop. Our lures went into the water, and we started backing down the first hole. Much to my dismay, this hole did not produce any fish this morning. So, we began to work, hole by hole, down the river. Although we had some slaps, with fish on and fish off, so far we had been fishless, UNTIL… Chip’s line got as tight as a guitar string, and the rod began to pulsate, with the rod tip hitting the water. Chip was on his first Sacramento King, a beautiful big buck of 36 pounds! We had some more hits, and couple of more on and off’s, when Chip SCORED again! This time he brought in a 30+ pound hen. Shortly after, it was John’s turn, and once again the line went tight, as if you could play it like a banjo, and shortly after, a beautiful Sacramento King hen made her way in with her friends, to the Jacuzzi aboard the Vicki Ann. So, with one day down, and one to go, we said Good Night. Our second day began without John, as unfortunately he could not join Chip for the second bout. So, we launched the Vicki Ann and once again, headed up river. This morning was golden, for it was not long before Chip had his first fish of the day, a beautiful little hen of 27 pounds. Then, we made our way back to the head of the hole. We put our lures out, and Chip decided to have a bite to eat, so he placed his rod in the holder. As he was enjoying his snack, all heck broke loose! BANG! His rod holder broke, and his rod was laying on the deck of the Vicki Ann, with the fish trying to drag it off of the boat! But, it was caught, before it almost found it’s way into the water, and Chip told this fish, “This is Me now, Not the rod holder!” Then the fight commenced, and they battled on, for about 20 minutes, with both Chip and the fish trying to get the upper hand. Well… needless to say, Chip WON!! The 39 pound buck now lay on the deck of the Vicki Ann, instead of the broken rod holder, and the rod. We all had a terrific time laughing and joking over the past two days of this trip. These guys were great, and I hope to see them back fishing with me again real soon! Arrrr Matey’s! This trip began when I met Richard and Tex at the Motel in Redding, and soon we were on our way to the water. Our day started out slow, as the fish were gorging themselves on shad of about 1/2 inch long. We had one fish early, and then there was a several hour lull before Tex’s rod began to bend at a stifling rate! He had a fish with the first 5 minute’s, and then a fish about every 10 minutes thereafter. Richard scored last, with a nice little rainbow. Now, with a limit each, and the biggest fish being a respectable 22 inches, we all had a great time! Our day was now ending, and I took Richard and Tex back the Motel. The first day of this trip began when I met Richard and Paul at the Hotel in Anderson. Soon we were on our way to the river. Upon arrival, we launched the Vick Ann and proceeded a short ways to our first stop. We had just a couple of hits, and then the fish started running by us, in a Frenzy! These fish were on a mission that could not be stopped. When all the fish passed us, and scurried up the ladder, I decided to move up river. So, the Vicki Ann went back in her cradle, and up the river we went. In a short while, we re-launched the Vicki Ann, and not much went on, but we did have one additional fish on and off. The second day, we decided to begin up river, but the first hole produced nothing, and the second hole netted us the same result. However, on the third hole, the cry of “Fish On” was heard! She was a beautiful 17 pound salmon, and the stink was finally on the boat. We fished quite a while, and a few more holes, when I made the decision to move back up river to the original hole. We made several more passes, and finally the second fish Slammed the rod down, and the fight was on once again! This time, a beautiful buck of 20+ pounds found his way to the Jacuzzi, on the Vicki Ann. This was a great couple of days, with a couple of great guys, and I hope to see them back next year! This trip began when I met Bruce, Tim, and Chris at the river at 5 AM, in Cottonwood. Soon we were on the water searching for our prey. We searched hole after hole going down river, without as much as a single touch. So, I decided to bring everyone in, and fly up river. Arriving at our destination, we once again put our plugs in the water, and began to back down the river. When we had backed down appoximately 30 feet… BANG! The first rod went off, but it was not to be… as a couple of minutes into the string pulling party, the fish decided it no longer wished to be there, and departed. We fished there for a while longer, and then moved down, only one hole. Again we sent our plugs into the depths. The string pulling party then commenced again, and Tim was “On” with his first Sac River salmon! A few more passes, and Tim was “On” again, with his second! We then fished on with not even a bump. So, our day ended with 2 bright salmon to the boat, of 15 and 18 pounds. This was a great trip, and I hope to see this group back again a little later in the year! Arrrr Matey’s! This trip began when I met Buck and Mike in Anderson, and soon we were on our way to the river. We launched the Vicki Ann, and down river we went. On the first drift, we had one hit and miss. The second yielded nothing, so we changed the plugs we were using. We then went back up to the top of the hole, and prepared to make another assault on this hole. Buck dropped his plug first, and Mike was in the process of dropping his, when Buck’s rod went off… “Fish On”! This was not a large fish, only about 11 pounds, but in true salmon fashion, it still gave him a tussle! We made one more pass through that hole, without a tug, so I decided to move down river to the next hole. Upon our arrival, it was not long before Mike’s rod went off, and it was “Fish On” once again! Mike struggled to get this little torpedo in, and it was a nice bright buck of only about 11 pounds, but full of fight! We fished another couple of hours, and not seeing another fish, we put the Vicki Ann back on the trailer, and up stream we went, about 30 miles. Upon our arrival, we again launched the Vicki Ann, and then Buck saw a fish roll up stream just a little ways, so I went up above where he had seen the fish. He must have thought I was crazy, when I said that we should be able to catch this fish. Now, with our plugs in place, we began backing down the river, when… WHAM! The last fish of the day… a nice hen of about 16 pounds, (not shown in the picture) was brought to the boat, and the waiting Jacuzzi. Our day ended as we took the Vicki Ann back to the trailer. We had a great day of fishing, with lots of fun and laughter throughout, and I hope to see these two back a little later this year! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

Not too far up river, we put the Vicki Ann back into the river, and began to fish once again. This time we stayed approx. 2 hours, and I decided to move once more. This time we moved about 30 more miles up river, where once again, we placed the Vicki Ann in the water, and were on our way. But this time, it was a different story. We didn’t have time to bring in all the rods before Pete’s rod went off, but it was not meant to be, and the fish continued up the river with great haste. A few more hits, and couple of holes later, Pete’s rod once again took the big dip, and the cry of “Fish On!” rang out on more time! But, this time it stuck, and a beautiful 17 pounder found it’s way to the waiting net. Our day ended as we put the Vicki Ann back on the trailer, and said our good-byes. So we went back up, and started another pass. We had to make 2 more passes before the cry of “Fish On!” was heard again, and Anthony now had 2 Sacramento River Kings to his credit. A couple of more passes and it was Joey’s turn. However, this one was not meant to be. The fish was on, off, and back on again, and then finally departed. But he made up for it 2 passes later, with a pretty little 15+ pounder. By the end of our day, we had 5 fish on, and 3 in the boat, ranging from 8 – 16 pounds. Soon the Vicki Ann was floating in her element, the waters of the Sacramento River, and everyone boarded. We proceeded down river, and I turned her into the current. Towards the end of the first pass, Adam hooked his first Sacramento King, not a large fish… but just a beginning. The second pass Kevin hooked up to a rather large fish, and we fought it for a few minutes, when it decided to go South, rather than play with us. We then moved down river, and it wasn’t until about 11 AM that the cry went out once more, “Fish On!” This yielded Kevin a bright Buck of 32 pounds! Now, it was not long before Adam once again, was tied up into his second Sacramento King, and this time a much larger fish, and not to be outdone, it was a beautiful 33 pound King that found it’s way to the Vicki Ann, and the waiting Jacuzzi! The first pass yielded 3 hits, so I decided to make another pass, as there was a pod of fish in the area. On the second pass, Justin hooked his first Sacramento King… not a big fish by any stretch of the imagination, but never the less, still a King, and soon it came to the boat. Only a little Jack, but Justin was happy! So, we moved down river to each hole, with a bite here, and a bite there. By this time it was getting late, so I moved the Vicki Ann back to the first hole where the fish had been earlier. We made several passes to no avail, when I noticed movement in the water, so I powered up and moved ahead of them. Again our plugs went in, and again, Justin’s rod went off, and another Jack salmon found it’s way to the boat. Justin was the King of the river on this trip, and we all had a great time! I met David and Clifford at the Hotel in Anderson at 5:30 AM, for our second day of fishing, and they were excited about getting back out on the water. So, without further adieu, we were again on our way. When we reached the river, I launched the Vicki Ann, and we were off once again. It couldn’t have been a prettier morning. We had not gone very far, when I turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and we began to backtroll our KwikFish through some of my familiar waters. Seeing that boats were down in the main hole, we began our search. It didn’t take long, approx. 10 Mins. from the time we launched, that we had our first fish, a beautiful little chrome bright, 15 pound salmon, with the scales still coming off of it, as it was lifted out of the water with our net. Approx. 20 Mins. later, Clifford’s rod went off with a bang, and he was in for a fight! The fight went on for appox. 15 Mins., when we finally coaxed the big fish of the day, a 38 pound male, to our waiting net. Then the bite slowed down, and like everyone else, I began to search. We tried a couple of holes back down river, when I decided that perhaps, I should just work the water well, in the hole where we had first caught fish. Good decision… We had a couple of more grabs, and then Dave’s rod went off once more! One more King to the boat. It wasn’t long before Clifford had his second King, and we were ready to call it a day. This was a half day trip, but one of the best of the beginning of our Fall Run Salmon Season here in Northern California, and Clifford now holds the River Pirate Top Angler Record of the year for Salmon! Finally, I made the decision to come back up river. Then, at the second hole coming back up river, I noticed there were no boats, so I decided to stop and work it hard. On the first drift through the hole, moving very slowly and methodically, it happened. “Fish On!” While it was not a big fish, it was still a nice little Sac River King, bright and shiny in the morning sun, and Rod had a good time bringing it to the boat. We fished a few more holes, with not even a strike. On July 16th, opening day of Salmon Season, Jerry and I began fishing around 5:00 AM, but on the Sacramento River today, it looked more like the day of the Boats, than the day of the Salmon, as the boats were bumper to bumper on the river, and as a result, the fish were not very cooperative, and not many were caught. I did catch 2 salmon of about 16 – 18 pounds, but unfortunately, my camera batteries died, and I didn’t get any photos. This day began when I met Ray in Anderson at 6 AM, and off to the river we went. When we arrived, I launched the Vicki Ann, and we were soon back trolling. It wasn’t 3 minutes later that Ray was fighting his first trout of the day… a beautiful little 13 inch rainbow. As time passed we had 10 On, and brought 7 more to the boat. While we were trout fishing, Ray told me that he had never caught a shad, so I suggested that we go and do that very thing, and he was ready! So, we put the Vicki Ann back on the trailer, and headed down river about 30 miles. When we arrived, we again launched the Vicki Ann, and in a short while, Ray caught his very first shad! We then caught several more of about 3 1/2 – 4 pounds, and by then, it was almost time to return to Anderson. So, with about 14 fish to the boat, that were all released back to the water, our day was ending. We both had a great time on this trip, and I hope to see Ray back a little later this year, for another great day of fishing on the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day began when I met Harry at his Motel in Redding at 6 AM. We were soon at the ramp, and launching the Vicki Ann. We barely had our lines out… about 5 minutes, and the first landlocked salmon was fighting at the end of Harry’s line. After that, it was “Fish On” about every 10-15 minutes! These fish must have thought they’d found the best Diner Anywhere! As the hours passed, about 14 more fish came to the boat, and then things started to slow down a bit, but we were still catching fish at regular intervals. Today’s trip yielded 20 landlocked salmon, and 2 beautiful rainbow’s, that were all released back to the water to play. All of the fish of the day were between 14-16 inches. The day ended when I dropped Harry off at his Motel. He was a happy, but tired guy by then, but we both enjoyed this trip, and had lots of fun and laughter out on the water. I hope to see him back to fish with me again sometime soon. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day began when I met Gino, and his two children, Nick and Angelina, on the water at 6 AM. Everyone boarded the Vicki Ann, and soon our lines were out. I wasn’t long before Nick had the first fish On, but this little acrobat mananged to shake loose before he could get it to the boat. Angelina was next, and this little critter did make it… all the way to the waiting Jacuzzi on the Vicki Ann. We fished hard on this trip, but the fish were just not cooperating. They were biting, but they were letting go before we could begin to play with them. Angelina caught 1 rainbow trout, and 2 landlocked salmon. So, as the day went on… the Score was, Angelina (3), and Everyone else (0). In spite of the fact that it was a very warm day on the water, and the fish had an attitude, we still had a good time this trip. I hope I can enjoy the company of this family on another day, for some really good fishing, here in Northern California. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day started when I met Rob, his Daughter Julie, and Mark, in Anderson, at 6 AM, and we were soon off to the river. We promptly launched the Vicki Ann, and headed down the river for a short jaunt. I turned the Vicki Ann into the current, and we soon began to back troll. It wasn’t long before Rob had the first fish On… a beautiful little native rainbow, jumping in the morning sun. Not long after that, Julie had her first fish On, followed by Mark. We worked our way down the river, catching a few nice little 13 inch rainbows, here and there, for about 6 miles. Then I made the decision to go back up to where we had begun, and then it was the “Rob Show”! He hooked and landed 5 fish within the next fifteen minutes! Then Mark and Julie landed a couple of more, with Julie landing the biggest rainbow of 15 inches! The last fish of the day was caught by Mark… a pretty little 13 inch rainbow. Total tally for the day was: 18 rainbows, with the biggest being 15 inches, and a myriad of 13 inchers. Our day ended a little early, as they were on their way to set up camp at the Lake, to finish up their vacation. This was a great trip, and everyone had fun. I hope to see them back for some more good fishing on the Sacramento River! Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began when I met Gene, Ken, and Kirk on the water, around 8 AM. With a few quick Hello’s, they boarded the Vicki Ann, and we headed off for our day of fishing. We had quite a few hits, but the fish were biting very softly. Result… no hook-ups. So, we soldiered on, and the hours were passing quickly, and even I was beginning to wonder if I had lost my touch. But… as fishing goes, just about that time, we got the first fish to latch on and hold. It was a nice little trout of about 13 inches. It wasn’t too long after that, we got our 2nd and 3rd trout, and then, came the first landlocked salmon. There again, not a big fish, only about 13 inches, but welcome… never the less. (These fish are not as large as their cousins, the “Big Kings”… but they are tons of fun to catch, and will still give you a good fight.) Then… 2 more landlocked salmon, and it was starting to get late, and I finally returned the guys to their waiting families. Although there were only about 6 fish caught on this trip, these guys were great, and fun to fish with. We all had a great time on the water, and I hope to see them back again sometime soon. This day started when I met Manny and John at the boat ramp, as we arrived at the river at approx. the same time this morning. I launched the Vicki Ann, and up the river we went, to a small stretch that I frequent. I started the kicker, and turned the big motor off, and we began to back-troll our Hot Shots. The first pass through this area produced 3 nice trout. Now, with the sun beginning to get high, I decided to go down river a bit. It wasn’t long before Manny hooked into the first of many trout in this area. Then John was On, and then Manny, and on and on it went! We hooked and lost maybe 15-20 trout, and broke off one fish that would have been appox. 20+ inches, who now has a trophy of it’s fight, and is probably gloating at us now. We managed to bring a 22-incher to the boat, and the Sacramento River yielded a total of 25 fish to the boat. Our fishing day ended at appox. 4:30, as John and Manny had to be home early. We all had a great time, and I hope to fish with them again. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began when I met Frank and his Daughter Hannah, at their Hotel in Anderson. Soon we were off to the river. I launched the Vicki Ann, and down the river we went. Shortly after anchoring up, Frank’s rod went off, and his first fish began to play, but… before he could get it to the boat, Hannah’s rod also went off. Score tied One to One! Two more fish were caught in the first hole… Now, Two to Two! However, the wind had pushed us ever closer to the bank, so it was time to move to the next hole. Upon arrival there, things heated up for a while, but then the wind started to shift, and detecting even a good bite was getting ever more difficult. But… we soldiered on, hoping the wind would subside, and we caught several more fish. Finally the wind subsided enough for us to go back and try the first hole one more time, before we called it a day. With several fish missed, and two more to the boat, it was time to say our farewell’s to the river, with a total of 30 fish for the day, and a few that measured approx. 23 inches. I had a great time with Frank and Hannah, and I hope to see them back again. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began when I met Jerry, and his Son Matt in Anderson, and we all headed for the river. We had planned to fly fish for trout, and then for some shad a little later. When we arrived at the river, I launched the Vicki Ann, and off we went to find some trout. The weather had turned out to be a little breezy, and although we tried, the strong wind gusts became too much for us to continue with trout fishing. At that point we decided to try our luck with the shad. The wind gusts continued up and down, but we weren’t giving up yet, so I headed for the first hole, tuned the Vicki Ann into the current, and dropped the anchor. The fish were there, and we were going for it! Matt was first On with his spinning rod! Jerry was now ready with his fly rod, and WHAP, his first fish was On! This is where the fun of the day began, and although we didn’t catch that many fish on this trip, we still had a great time, and I introduced Jerry to a new species of fish… as this was his first time out shad fishing. The count for the day was about 12-15, as the strong gusting wind was not in our favor. All in all, we still had lots of fun, and I hope to see these two back on another day, for some good fishing on the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip began as I met Ross and Trevor at the Hotel, and we quickly headed for the river. When we arrived, it was about 7:15 AM, and they were anxious to get on the water. So… I launched the Vicki Ann, and headed down the river, and when I turned her into the current, and dropped the anchor, they didn’t have to wait long, as the fishing was soon to begin. At the first spot, the action was a little slow, and we only caught about 6 or 7 fish, and although Ross and Trevor were avid fishermen, they had never been shad fishing, and weren’t quite sure what to expect… but the power of these little sluggers didn’t disappoint them. (The bent rod, held by Ross, in the photo, will give you an idea.) The second spot proved to be more productive, with Ross and Trevor both fighting and pulling in shad, until there were about 30-35 brought to the boat, but soon to be back in the river swimming with their buddies. We fished for some other species, including stripers, trout, and sturgeon, as the day waned into early evening. There were a few bites, but these fish were not as cooperative as the shad. We laughed and joked through the entire day, and I hope to see these two back, for another fun trip on the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This trip started when I met Jared and Natalia in Los Molinos around 7 AM, and we headed for the river. Jared had brought along his fly rod, and was set to try some fly fishing for trout and shad, while Natalia was content with a spinning rod. A short jaunt down the river, and the Vicki Ann was turned into the current, and the fun began. Within 2-3 minutes Natalia was on her first shad. As she was fighting it to the boat, Jered had become embroiled in his own battle. Back and forth they went with a fish, and then things started to slow down a little, so we took a short ride to the next spot, and then… it became the “Natalia Show” for the next 30-45 minutes, as she boated 12 fish, and Jared was on the other side of the boat fighting his own battle. Soon it was 12:30, and the wind was picking up a little, so we decided to take a break. The clouds were closing in, and we took about 3 hrs. reflecting the morning bite, and looking forward to the afternoon bite on the water. When we returned, I lost count of the fish after the first 50 for the day. This was a very good fishing day, and we all had a great time! Day 2… we met again, at about 6:30 AM, but this time we headed up the river, and had almost the same results as the day before, with Jared and Natalia both catching fish. This 1 1/2 day trip yielded upwards of 70 fish… the biggest, 23 1/2 inches, and weighing in at 4 1/2 pounds, as there were also a few river rainbows caught, and released to the river to swim for another day. This was great trip, and I hope to see Jared and Natalia back for some more good fishing on the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

It didn’t take long ’til the first fish was on, and using the current to it’s advantage, as Jamie was enjoying her first fish of the day, and then, with a quick “Hello” the fish was released. But, not to worry… as another was on in a matter of seconds, fighting with all it’s might, and trying to elude the net. After a while, this one also succumbed to the crew of the day. As time passed, the action just went on and on, and everyone was having a great time! By the end of the day, 40+ fish found their way to the net to share a brief moment with us, and would then continue on their way. This was another fun trip on the Sacramento River! Arrrr Matey’s! In a short while, I launched the Vicki Ann, and we headed down river. I soon found the first hole, and anchored up. The fishing began a little on the slow side, as the sun was high in the sky, but as the shadows began to hit the water, the fishing heated up, and the frenzy began. With doubles and triples abound, everyone was having a ball! Our day ended with about 30 fish in the boat. This was another great trip on the Sacramento River! Arrrr Matey’s! This trip began as I met Harry and his Son Aaron, at their Motel, about 7 AM. I was glad to see them back, as they had fished with me for trout, only last month, and this time they were looking forward to fishing for stripers. We chatted for a few, and then made our way to the river. When we arrived, the water was a little low, and on the muddy side… so I launched the Vicki Ann, and headed up river. While I was setting up the rods for some trolling, Harry and Aaron were enjoying the scenery. We trolled for a few, before one of the rods jumped once, but the fish was gone. Then we started to drift minnows, and only a short time later, another rod started bouncing and bending, and this one was hooked! A beautiful 8 1/2 pound striper made it’s way to the boat, and everyone was smiling and having a good time. A few more hits were felt, but the fish Gods were not on our side this time, as none of them found their way to the Jacuzzi that I had prepared at the front of the Vicki Ann. Our fishing day was now ending, and Harry and Aaron took their turns holding up the shiny striper that was caught. Although only one fish was boated, this was still another great day of fishing and fun on the Sacramento River. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

As time passed, and we were already having fun, I spotted a shad ball, and decided to fish for some bass, it wasn’t long before everyone was hooked up, and several nice bass came to the boat. By now it was about mid-afternoon, and the rain was coming down, and the winds were picking up, and I was losing sight of the shad ball, so we fished for some trout, and caught a few. Later on, we caught a few more land-locked salmon, and by the end of the day, we had boated about 14 fish, with a little variety. This was a fun trip, and we all had a great time! Arrrr Matey’s! I set the rods in their holders, and we started trolling our Rebels. Nothing was going for a little while, but after a few, the fish started showing on the graph. It wasn’t long before 2 of the rods were bent, and Rudy was the first to grab. I reached for the other rod and it was too late, but Rudy was already fighting the first fish of the day. Not long after, a nice 24 1/2 inch striper came to the boat, and shortly after that came another 25 inch fish. As mid-day approached, the temps were climbing into the 70’s, and we decided to take a short break. When we returned, the fishing got even better, and we boated about 22 fish in all… the largest being approx. 12 pounds. All fish were released except 2. We spent a few minutes chatting, and were soon off to the river. I launched the Vicki Ann and headed down river. Eric was the first one on, a pretty little rainbow trout. We caught a few more fish, as time passed, and it was now getting late, as this was a 1/2 day trip. So, we said Good Bye until tomorrow, and made arrangements to meet the next morning. Day two began when I met Richard and Eric at their Motel this time, and we were again off to the water… this time to troll for some land-locked salmon. We trolled a little while before the first one hit… a beautiful silver scrapper of about 20 inches. It wasn’t long after that we had the second one in the boat, and then the third. Things died down for awhile, and then we caught a few more. By now, it was almost time to depart the water again, as this was also a 1/2 day trip, and they had to be back on the road that evening. We chatted for a few, and then made our way to the river. I launched the Vicki Ann and headed into the main stream of the river. Michael was the first one on a pretty little rainbow, followed by Stephanie. A few more fish were caught, and then it was Krista’s turn, however… it was not a trout. She had caught one of our Sacramento River smallmouth bass. We cut things short that morning, as they had their dog with them… a beautful greyhound, and made plans to meet later in the day for an afternoon of fishing. However, Krista could not go along this time, as the dog could not be left alone. So Steve, Michael, Stephanie, and I made our way back to the river. Not many more fish… but a couple of quality fish were caught that afternoon. As the day was waning, I put the Vicki Ann back on the trailer, and we went back to the motor home. As we all said our Good Bye’s, I received a big hug from Michael and Stephanie. I had a great time with this wonderful family, and I hope to see them back again very soon. Arrrr Matey’s! As the day progressed, the boys were hooking most of the fish, and the Dad’s were still trying. It was later in the afternoon that Gabriel hooked up with the New River Pirate Trout Record of the Year… a gorgeous 4 1/4 pound Rainbow Trout! As we started drifting our Glow Bugs, Aaron hooked up with the first fish, but soon lost it. Then Harry followed suit, and soon had a beautiful 19 inch rainbow trout. This trip began when I met Michael and his Dad, and off to the water we went. After approx. 15 minutes on the water, we had our first take. Within about 10 minutes we had our second. Now, with fish on the graph, nothing seemed to want to play for a while. It wasn’t until we moved, that we had our next good strike. The fish were biting so lightly today, that is was very tough to tell they were there. We trolled for quite a while longer, when we decided to pull the rods in, and we noticed that 2 more fish had been swimming with the boat. At this point, we became aware that we had been escorting these fish for quite some time, and we all had a good chuckle. By now it was just about time to call it a day, so we turned back and headed for the ramp. With 3 landlocked salmon, and 2 trout in the box, we considered ourselves lucky, as many of the other boats had 1 or 2 fish to show for their day, and some had none. It was a tough bite, but everyone had a great time, just the same. This was a fun day on the water, with a couple of nice guys. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

The 10th of January was Buck and Mike’s fishing day… rain or shine! Well, it had stopped raining, but there was still some pretty heavy fog that morning. Although I had warned them that this was NOT a good day to catch fish, they wanted to fish anyway. (as Buck stated in our Guest Book) The water was muddy and high, as a huge storm had just come through this area, but they were still hoping for that “Big Trophy Salmon” that could be out there just before the closing of the Season, on the 14th. it was about 6:30 AM when I met them at their motel. So, we headed for the river. We tried many of the salmon holes I usually fish, but the fish were just not cooperating. As the day wore on, we fished hard, but there were just no biters, and even though there was no catching today, we still had a great time fishing on the Sacramento River. Due to a freak snow storm, (snow storms are not common in this area) and several rain storms, we contacted Amir 2 days prior to his fishing trip to cancel or re-schedule; but found that he was already here. So, he decided to try his luck anyway. Upon arrival at the river, it was clear to me that it was going to be a tough bite, at best, as the debris line had crested about 8 feet higher than it had been the day before, and had only dropped about 4 feet by that morning. With the water stained, and the temperature only in the mid to high 40’s, I was in doubt, but we soldiered on. There was no salmon or steelhead activity showing at all today, but we still managed a few nice rainbows. Amir and Dannarae still enjoyed the fishing and the scenery, in spite of the high water and muddy conditions of the Sacramento River. Weather conditions are improving now, and I hope to see them back again, catching many fish, on a beautiful sunny day. Arrrr Matey’s! Ken Hoffman, The River Pirate

This day began with a phone call, about 1 PM in the afternoon.  Soon after, Jerry and his dog Bear, met me in Redding, and off to the river we went.  It was a cold afternoon, with a scattering of light snow, but the water looked good, so we launched the Vicki Ann, and headed up river.  With a quick stop to get our baits ready along the bank, quietly we made our way to the first spot, and I slipped the anchor into the water, and the anchor rope came tight.  It was now time to try our luck.  We had only been waiting for about 10 minutes when the first rod went down, and the fun soon began.  Now, with the first fish in the boat, a beautiful hen of about 26 pounds, we dropped our offerings back to the fish once again.  It was soon apparent the the fish were cooperating today, as Jerry’s rod went off with a vengeance!  As the rod flattened out, and Jerry was now getting warmed up once again, as the fish was pulling, and he was trying to keep him in check, as the line was peeling off the reel.  But, the fish would finally give, under the pressure that Jerry was applying.  It would be about 20 minutes before we saw this fish on the surface, waiting to come and join his friend in the Jacuzzi aboard the Vicki Ann.  He weighed in at 47 pounds!  Now, our day was ending, as we made our way back to the ramp, and loaded the boat back on the trailer.  Although this was a short trip, if was lots of fun, and we had a great time fishing, and Jerry is now the River Pirate Top Angler for Salmon.  I hope to see him back fishing with me again soon!

This day began when I met Lee and Russ, at the hotel in Anderson, and soon we were on our way.  It was a cold morning, with the air hovering in the high 30’s, and a water temperature of 42 degrees.  The first hole produced not hardly a bite, so we dropped to the next spot, and anchored.  It wouldn’t take too long before Russ’s rod would bend for the first time of the day, but, it was shortlived, as the fish had other ideas.  We then decided to work the rest of the hole, and upon picking up the anchor, and backing down through the hole, Lee’s rod would bend, and the fight was on.  After about a 13 minute fight, he was looking at a gorgeous late fall King laying on the deck of the Vicki Ann.  We fished for a few more hours before we would get another, but it would come.  Another fish on and off, but within moments… Russ’s rod would bend once again, and this time it would stick.  Another beautiful bright Sac River King would make it to the boat.  The fish weighed in at 18 – 28 pounds.  With 2 fish to the boat, and a couple of other hits, everyone had a great time laughing and joking, and just having fun, and I hope to see these guys back fishing with me again soon!

On the first day of a 2 day fishing adventure, I met Jim, Norma, and Steve at the hotel in Anderson, and we were soon off to the river, to launch the Vicki Ann.  Today, things would happen quickly, as Steve, on the first run of the first hole, would have the first opportunity at a Sac River King.  After about a 10 minute fight, he had his Trophy aboard, and the day was young.  But although, we had a few other fish on, only 1 fish made it to the Vicki Ann, but we were all looking forward to the next day.
On the second day, things would get a little tougher.  Once again, we had a few hits, but it would not be until later in the day that Norma would get her fish to the boat, but not before she had a battle with a few other close calls.  Now, the fish she was fighting was trying every way it could to shake the hook, but Norma fought it like a Trouper, and it finally succumbed to her fishing skills.  No more fish came to the boat on this day, but Norma was happy!  We all had a great time, and I hope to see this group back fishing with me again!

This trip began when I met Doug and Carol at the hotel in Anderson, and we soon departed for the river. In our first hole, a few fish were jumping, but nothing came to the boat, so I decided to move down river a little farther. At the very end of the run, Doug hooked up with a nice 24 pound hen, that he fought for approx. 10 minutes, before it finally made it’s way to the ice box aboard the Vicki Ann 2. Making another pass through this hole, we decided to run back up river, to new territory. At the very top of the hole, Carol’s rod bent for the water, and “Fish On” was heard! She fought this fish for approx. 15 minutes, but as the fish came closer to the boat, it shook the lure out of it’s mouth, and a 30+ pounder was now swimming back to freedom, in the beautiful Sac River. Although Carol was a great sport, she was crushed over losing this fish! As the photo shows, she is holding out her hand, wishing that fish was there. As the day went on, we had 3 other hits, with one fish in the box, and 1 that got away… We still had a good time on the river, and I hope to see this couple back fishing with me again. This trip began when I met Jim in Redding, and we made our way to the river to launch the Vicki Ann 2.  Throughout the day we fished hard, in hopes of catching a Sac River King, but to no avail.  Although, Jim hooked a beautiful 2 pound Steelhead, that was released back into the swift current of the Sacramento River.  As soon as Jim hooked this fish, it was airborne, and put up a good 10 minute fight.  All in all, we had a good time on the river, and I hope to see him back fishing with me again!

I picked Marty up at about 3:30 in the afternoon, as he wanted to relax and fish after work that day. We headed for the river, and after fishing about 30 minutes, he landed this beautiful silversided chrome bright hen. He had 2 others on. Marty was happy, and had a big smile! All in all, not a bad afternoon. Arrrrr Matey’s, The River Pirate, Ken Hoffman

This trip began when I met Alan, Shannon, Brian and Kristin in Anderson, and soon we departed for the river, to launch the Vicki Ann.  In our first hole, it wasn’t long before the cry of “Fish On” was heard, but the fish soon fled.  Only minutes passed, and another fish was hooked, but was soon gone, in the swift current.  As we continued on through the hole, it wouldn’t be long before Shannon hooked and landed the first fish of the day!  A nice bright buck was soon in the Jacuzzi aboard the Vicki Ann.  Going back up to the top of the hole to make another run, soon it would be Kristin’s turn.  She battled a nice bright hen, that would soon join it’s friend in the Jaccuzi.  Throughout the day, we had 6 other hits, and 2 fish in the boat, but this day surely belonged to the Girls!  The fish weighed in at, 30 and 23 pounds.  We all had a great time on the water, laughing and joking, and I hope to see everyone back again!

This day began when I met Art and Steve at the hotel in Anderson, and shortly after, we were fishing.  Throughout the morning, we worked several holes, with nothing showing, so we continued on down river.  In this hole, it wouldn’t be long before Steve said, “Fish On!”  He fought a bright 23 pound hen for approx. 10 Mins., until it succumbed to his pressure.  We now had slime on the boat.  Continuing to work this hole, with not much showing, we decided to run back up river.  As we made our first pass, Art’s rod would bend and touch the water.  He fought this fish from the very top of the hole, until we finally netted it at the very bottom of the hole.  This Sac River King weighed in at, 44.7 pounds.  Now it was Art’s turn again, as he hooked into a 21 pound buck, that soon joined it’s buddies in the ice box aboard the Vicki Ann 2.  With 1 other fish on, and 2 other hits, and 3 fish in the vessel, we decided to call it a day.  We all had a awesome time, with lots of laughs, I hope to see these 2 guys back fishing with me again!

This day began when I met Peter and his daughter Natalie, in Anderson.  Soon after the Vicki Ann was launched, our fishing day would begin.  Natalie’s rod would go down twice on the first pass, but alas… no fish would make their way to the boat.  However, all that would change on the second pass, as Natalie’s rod went down once again, and stick this time.  Her very first salmon was now fighting her tooth and nail, for the right to continue up the river.   But, like a trouper, she came through, and subdued the fish!  A beautiful Sac River King hen would now have her ticket to the Jacuzzi, aboard the Vicki Ann.  Although we had multiple fish on after that, no more would make it to the boat.  We had a great day fishing the Sacramento River, and I hope to see them both back fishing with me again!

This day began when I met Greg, Pete, Dean, Roger, and John at the hotel in Anderson, and soon we were on our way to the river.  With the levels of the river not fluctuating today,  and the leaves and debris from the previous day’s wind storm, and the weather improving slightly, we had many more hits, with lots of fish on and off.  Today’s trip would produce 5 fish in all, ranging from 22-30 pounds!  Eve
